Matt Vosburgh, manager of the Urban Commuter in Tempe, said electric-bike sales at his shop have increased about 70 percent the first 10 weeks of this year compared with the first 10 weeks of last.
But Vosburgh isn't sure if it's just due to gas prices. He believes people are opening up to the idea of electric transportation and they're sick of the constant gas limbo game.
There are times when Burke knows he won't fit everything he needs into a backpack when he goes shopping, so he uses his car. But he prefers the ride on his electric bike, zipping by quietly, taking back streets, soaking in the scenery.
"When we were kids, we all loved to ride our bikes," Burke said. "And we just sort of went away from that."
