The classical definition of the State is that it is an institution which possesses one or both (and almost always both) of the following characteristics: (1) it acquires its income by physical coercion, Known as taxation; and (2) it asserts and maintains a coerced monopoly of th¾ provision of defense services (police, army and courts) over a given territorial area.
