The Philippine House of Representatives has passed a bill that would require the use of biometric authentication of individuals for voter registration as well as the actual voting process in the country, according to a NewsBytes Philippines article.
The hope behind the bill is that it will serve as a basis for moving the country towards automated registration and voting processes.
Half of the Philippines’ 48 million large population have already registered their biometrics with the government, but under the new bill those with their data on file would need to either re-register or otherwise biometrically confirm their identity to be officially registered to vote.
In addition to the need for registering the population’s biometric data, the bill would also require the development of a central database to maintain the data collected from registrants.
