Marie Callender's, a longtime metro Phoenix mainstay for after-church gatherings and takeout pies, abruptly closed all of its Arizona locations after its parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The four restaurants in the Phoenix area and one in Tucson were among 58 locations that were closed after the Perkins & Marie Callender's Inc.'s bankruptcy filing Monday. The restaurants each employ about 30.
The company's only Perkins Restaurant in Arizona, a location in Bullhead City, will remain open.
Perkins & Marie Callender's blamed a drop in spending and rising costs with the decision to seek Chapter 11 reorganization, which allows a company protection from creditors until it comes up with a court-approved restructuring of its debts. But observers note the traditional restaurants have been slow to react to changing consumer tastes that now favor healthier, lighter fare.
Perkins CEO Jay Trungale said additional locations could be closed.
