Pamela Meyer: How to spot a liar

• TED Talks/Pamela Meyer
Pamela Meyer thinks we’re facing a pandemic of deception, but she’s arming people with tools that can help take back the truth.

On any given day we're lied to from 10 to 200 times, and the clues to detect those lie can be subtle and counter-intuitive. Pamela Meyer, author of Liespotting, shows the manners and "hotspots" used by those trained to recognize deception -- and she argues honesty is a value worth preserving.

Lay it on them David !!!!.  But wait until they return to the TV with the popcorn.  Only few people realize lies were profusely used to hype the citizenry into every war and military action for the past 120 years, or that the USSR (rescued numerous times by the US when it was near collapse) was set up as a stalking horse to hype the U.S. military build-up, or that the CIA intelligence actions are the least of their operations.  Google CIA; ROGUE AGENCY RUN AMUCK.

Ms. Meyer IS correct. However, every "signal" that portends a lie isn't always an indication of a lie. Some of the behavioral "quirks" of lying are simply nothing more than nervous habits of the person who exhibits them...Context and a level of pertinent, commonly held knowledge of the topic that is associated with the conversation being examined are critical to determination of truth or falsitiy.

As for those who believe that the people who proclaim "expertise" in such areas of social and converstional interaction might "abuse" their assumed "power", they already do:  This is the stuff of every form of 'profiling'. What's wrong with it is that the fools who want us to believe they have some esoteric knowledge or skill are often con artists and FOOLS; they're intent to to somehow justify their supposed "professional" status and maybe even work it into a job. At its worst, the rank and file are so damn lame as to believe these smucks! There is much to be said for knowledge, even if you are to ignorant to put it to actual use.

To those who believe that people "know when they are being played":  Check in with the rest of the real world on your thirteenth bithday. Most people still believe that Columbus "discovered America"; that the Pilgrims were a social sub-set of zealots bent on religious freedom; and that native Americans were socially backward "savages"...I won't go into the other crap that functions as "deep frames" in what we call American culture. Most people believe what they want to believe - reality and truth be damned!

We are lied to every time a politician opens his/her mouth! Where in the world do people think the term "spin doctor" came from? Trust me, there are a whole bunch of liars-by-choice who make a bunch of "your" money by developing the truth, in accordance with what some politico or predatory "industrialist" thinks will scamm you out of more votes or money.

How can people still believe they are living in a world of "truth, justice, and anything resembling the myth of the American way? It's no wonder were loosing the Republic...Most don't even know we ever had one! And, they certainly don't really understand what it was!
