On May 5, 2011, the web site www.geodetecting.com announced plans to introduce a new entry in the international geocoin catalog. Just over five months later, on September 27th, 2011, the launch was official.

The popular hobby of “geocaching” began more than ten years ago when the US government removed selective access to global satellites for GPS devices making them more accurate. When the announcement was made, GPS enthusiasts soon began to chat online about the possibilities of this new technology and a hobby was born; “The Great American GPS Stash Hunt.” A rule was also informally established: “find some stuff, leave some stuff.”
