IMMIGRATION AND OVERPOPULATION: YOU CAN EAT TOO MUCH AND GROW TOO FAT

Liberals, usually more educated and enlightened than conservatives, join ecological clubs to save the environment from further damage—caused by excessive human numbers. Liberals fill the rolls of the Population Connection (formerly ZPG), Sierra Club, Nature Conservancy, Audubon Society and Green Peace. Liberals understand that overpopulation, while most of them remain too afraid to speak out, creates an ominous future for the United States as well as all life around the planet.

Conservatives usually deeply religious, however, must be pulled—kicking and screaming—toward any kind of care for the environment. They object to or deny climate destabilization, consequences of species extinctions and most of them think that “Peak Oil” or the depletion of oil—remains a hoax.

Fact: humanity adds 77 million more of its kind annually to the planet. It poisons, pollutes, degrades and wreaks havoc on the natural world at accelerating rates of speed as it moves into the 21st century. The “Nature Channel” and “Our Planet” TV programs document horrific damage around the planet via humans.  At the same time, over two billion humans cannot secure clean drinking water daily. Another 18 million die of starvation or starvation related diseases annually. (Source: World Health Organization)

Additionally, humans expect to add three billion more of themselves to this planet in the next 41 years.

Result: greater harm to Earth’s ecological systems assures greater damage to the planet’s ability to sustain all life around the globe.

World Migration Dilemma

So what’s the big deal?  Because those 77 million added humans originate from third world countries—their starvation and misery rates accelerate.  In the 21st century, a new phenomenon of mass migration from unsustainable third world countries into stable first world countries—grows into the millions.  The obvious irony—no end to the line.

Liberals support legal and illegal mass immigration into the United States because they want to save all of humanity.  They want everyone to enjoy a ‘better life’.  They promote the noblest of intentions.

Conservatives, on the other hand, want to preserve their language, culture and the rule of law within the United States.  They also support legal immigration that includes over 1.2 million from around the world into the United States annually.  That number represents more immigrants allowed into the USA annually than all other countries combined.

Yet, the line grows by 77 million annually.  For an educational presentation of the entire dilemma, please visit www.numbersusa.com and view one of the most downloaded 14 minute videos in the United States by Roy Beck: “Immigration by the Numbers”. You will awaken to greater understanding of our “human dilemma” on a worldwide stage. It’s brilliant!

Conundrum for Both Sides

Today, top experts like Richard Heinberg, Dr. Diana Hull, Dr. Albert Bartlett, Chris Clugston, Dr. William Catton, Dr. Tainter, Charles C. Hartman, Dr. John Tanton, Aldolfo Doring, Governor Richard D. Lamm and dozens of others understand America’s growing hyper-population growth disaster.

Yet, at every juncture, national media and corporate America ignore it or suppress any mention of it. Nonetheless, the media reports its growing symptoms:  West is hurtling toward a water crisis”; www.sltrib.com/opinion/ci_11417265 ; “Toilet water to tap water”, Los Angeles Times, “Species extinction grows worldwide”, Population Media, and the list grows.

Population Stability in the USA

Since 1970, the average U.S. female birthed 2.03 children. Thus, the U.S. maintains a stable replacement level population. However, since 1965, unending legal and illegal immigration added 100 million people to the USA. Latest population projections show America adding another 100 million within 30 years by 2035.  That’s around the corner folks! (Source: PEW Report, March, 2008; US Census Bureau; Fogel/Martin 2006 “US Population Projections”.

That next 100 million will overwhelm our ability to maintain water, energy, food and a balanced environment.  It will lift out of reach any chance for a stable and sustainable population within the USA. It will also create horrific water shortages and exacerbate the energy and climate destabilization crises.

Therefore, it boils down to choices.  So what logical and rational action can we take? Can we keep adding 2.4 million legal and illegal immigrants annually, (what we’ve been doing for 20 years), from a line that grows by 77 million annually?  Do we think we can add another 100 million, and another 100 million after that, without pause?  Do we want to be like China or India or Mexico? Mexico City houses a horrid 22 million in an air polluted, water scarce and poverty ridden quagmire of so many problems—no one can solve them so everyone lives degraded lives.  What happens when our civilization becomes overwhelmed by sheer hyper-population overshoot?  What about quality of life?

Do you have any solutions that extend beyond emotions or irrational thinking? Would you promote something beyond a Faustian Bargain or Hobson’s Choice?

My solutions:

1.   Promote  and offer reproductive choices and Family Planning worldwide.

2.   Help third world countries with tractors, sanitation, food production and water purification.

3.   Reduce immigration to the USA to 100,000 a year because that’s how many egress the country annually. Net gain of zero! That would move America toward a sustainable future for all citizens.

4.   That would encourage other countries to become responsible for their own populations and take responsibility for their futures.

5.   Institute a “US Sustainable Population Policy” to bring about a discussion and debate about population in America. Similar policy for each state.

6.   Institute a “US Water Usage Policy” to secure ample water for humans, crops and animals into the 21st century.

7.   Institute a “US Environmental Impact Policy” to allow all plants and animals a share of their existence and sustainability alongside humans.

8.   Institute an “International Sustainable Population Policy” to promote a stable population of humans for the entire planet that will allow humanity to survive into the 21st century.

9.   All-out scientific pursuit for a non-polluting alternative energy to drive the engines of humanity safely into the 21st century.

10.               What are your ideas for a viable future for this civilization?
