Bombshell Report: Russia Funded Russian Elections

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Notorious fake news site Buzzfeed News lacks credibility, embarrassing itself with its rubbish. On November 14, it headlined:

"Secret Finding: 60 Russian Payments 'To Finance Election Campaign Of 2016,' " saying:

"The FBI is scrutinizing more than 60 money transfers sent by the Russian Foreign Ministry to its embassies across the globe, most of them bearing a note that said the money was to be used 'to finance election campaign of 2016.' "

"(T)ransactions…moved through Citibank accounts and totaled more than $380,000, each came from the Russian Foreign Ministry and most contained a memo line referencing the financing of the 2016 election."

"The money wound up at Russian embassies in almost 60 countries from Afghanistan to Nigeria between Aug. 3 and Sept. 20, 2016."

"It is not clear how the funds were used. At least one transaction that came into the US originated with VTB Bank, a financial institution that is majority-owned by the Kremlin."

The purpose of the funds was very clear - intended for September 2016 lower house State Duma elections, not the US one any others abroad.

Buzzfeed's expose laid an egg, all over the face of its writers, producing anti-Russia trash, not journalism.

Its senior investigations editor Ariel Kaminer called the report an "exclusive scoop." So did Jason Leopold contributing to the story.

UK investigative editor Heidi Blake called the report a "bombshell" revelation. Los Angeles Times writer Adam Johnson called it "cynical as s- -t."

Bloomberg's Leonid Mershidsky tweeted: "Idiots. The Russian election of 2016, not the US one, you exceptionalist morons."

Mocking Buzzfeed's report, Russia's embassy responded, saying:

"We'll have to disappoint the 'investigators. We have been, and will be, holding State Duma and presidential elections."

"According to our constitution. Including for Russian citizens abroad. Throughout the world. Including the US. If we need more money to organize it, we'll get it from Moscow. Through Citibank. Or another bank. Legally," adding:

"This attempt to artificially draw Russia and the Embassy to the internal US disagreements has failed in the most shameful manner."

Virtually everything reported about Russia disgracefully demonizes the country and/or Vladimir Putin - accuracy abandoned for shameless propaganda.
