Analysis of Ron Paul’s success:
“How is he winning and why have I not heard about him?”
Whether it's Washington, Alabama, New Hampshire, or South Carolina, Dr. Ron Paul’s freedom message is always the same.  He does not seem to play to the crowd. He is certainly consistent with his principled message of nonintervention in foreign affairs, but also on his pro-freedom message.  His voting record is very clear: No to the Iraq War (2 times), No to taxes, No to the Patriot Act, No to the Military Commissions Act, No to the National Id, and on his voting record goes stretching back over his 10 years as a Texas Congressman.

Congressman Ron Paul never wavers. He wants America out of NATO, out of the WTO, the UN, and even out of NAFTA.  One thing for sure is, he is very predictable and consistent with his views, whether you agree or not on all his positions, one must admit, “Dr. No” is unusual for any Washington politician who usually supports all sorts of pork.

Married to his wife for over 50 years, the former baby doctor lives in Texas but is very worried about Americas future, especially for the young.  Being a member of the Banking & Finance Committee, Paul warns us about the financial disaster ahead.  He says we are “borrowing billions from the Chinese to finance our foreign policy of War, and Intervention and policing the world.  We print paper money to pay for our undeclared UN wars, and we make ourselves less safe in the process.”  He does not talk down to them with simply clichés and so far, has not attacked any of his opponents personally.  Even after Rudy Giuliani exclaimed, “Gee I have not heard that before. That’s an absurd explanation as to why the terrorists attacked us on 9/11”, Dr Paul simply continued to explain Americas history of intervening in the Middle East.

The Public seems to understand his message.  Dr. Paul has placed 1st or 2nd in a total of 16 straw polls.

Far behind Ron Paul, are Senator John McCain and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.  In terms of visible support the media loves to look at those two campaigns, but behind the scenes, the media’s self interest is the large advertising dollars.  This should be no surprise, since the media is always longing for advertising dollars, but the media as an industry itself, does not seem to be aware of its own part in promoting candidates with large advertising dollars.  Major media will talk about and write about a candidates “war chest” for months.  So it should not surprise us that as an industry looking for revenue, they spend too much attention, perhaps not even consciously, on candidates with “large war chests”, i.e. advertising budgets.  Then, when the media calls 500 people at home, who’s name do you recognize and who would you support, the public will have “only heard of” the “top tier” candidates.

It’s a self fulfilling cycle.  The more poll results showing those with big advertising budgets, get more media attention, and back again.  The major media feels justified and yet unaware of their part in making money a subject of a Presidential campaign, then name recognition, then popularity, then money, then name recognition, then back to money.  It’s a cycle that the “second tier” (read low budget) presidential campaigns have never been able to break.

The internet bypasses the large media costs of getting one’s message out.  With emails, networking groups, Google and YouTube, Ron Paul’s campaign has been lifted from what would be media obscurity. And it’s not as if the Ron Paul campaign has done it intentionally.

Millions of volunteers have lifted his campaign to the point where the mainstream media has been paying attention to the Ron Paul “internet phenomenon”.   Yet the Ron Paul’s campaign has given up $0 campaign dollars to the mainstream media.  The word is getting out about Ron Paul, despite mainstream media.  The mainstream media have become fully aware that they have played no part in the public’s awareness of the Ron Paul Campaign and his message of “freedom”.

Yet the Ron Paul Campaign is flush with $3.5 million and they are expecting to have well over $10,000,000 come the Primaries.  Unlike the major candidates laden with PAC monies, Ron Paul average donation is less then a $1,000 and no PAC money.   Even in this day and age, ten million is plenty of money for spot TV ads and newspaper advertising.  Volunteers are crucial, and nothing beats word of mouth, neighbor to neighbor.  Meanwhile, the grassroots campaign is exploding.  Volunteers from every State make their very own YouTube video testimonials and even short films about Congressmen Ron Paul and send it out via email to their friends to watch.  Hand held digital camcorders seem to be doing the trick.  Ron Paul’s campaign is the best “viral marketing” campaign of any of the presidential candidates, and none of it is being centrally directed at all, it is truly “grassroots”.

The Ron Paul campaign is made up of millions of volunteers, all stuffing envelopes and posting Ron Paul Revolution signs everywhere.  It’s a true working man’s grassroots campaign.  Here is an example: as the media ignores Ron Paul and writes 4,919 articles on other candidates about the Iowa straw poll in which Mitt Romney spent over $200,000 ensuring his 30% win, Ron Paul takes away a surprising 10% finish, especially when the media polls said he would take only 2%.   Compare this to the trickle of mainstream articles (162) for all five straw polls combined in which Ron Paul was victorious.  These 162 articles are just one-sentence blurbs on Ron Paul, usually incorporated into an article about a more general topic.  Insiders in the GOP have taken notice of the Ron Paul campaign.

For insiders in the GOP, especially the Fred Thompson campaign, they have even begun to copy Ron Paul and champion the Constitution. They have been trying their best to “out freedom message” Congressman Ron Paul.  Yet Fred Thompson’s long record of being a Washington insider, a lobbyist for Haiti’s brutal dictator during the Clinton years, and several other non-conservative positions, means he will have a whole lot of convincing to do.  Many conservatives are listening, even though he doesn’t have to answer for himself in the debates.  Keeping the curiosity about himself, is perhaps why Thompson has not entered the race as of yet.  While not in the race, he can gather monies and support, and not declare any of it like the other candidates do.  In effect, his campaign is tapping his fame as an actor on Law and Order and doing an end-around of the debating and vetting process.  Perhaps too, this is why Carl Rove has left the White House.

Insiders say that the Bush White House is supportive of Fred Thompson.  Thompson, like Giuliani, McCain, and others contenders, all call for more war and continued presence in Iraq, even a war with Iran, if needed.  In fact, so hawkish is Mitt Romney, he has called for “two Guantanamos” in the first debate.  Only Ron Paul, disagrees, sighting “blowback from past interventions” and seems to be the only one worrying about the loss of Habeas Corpus under the Bush Administration.

To many observers, only Ron Paul seems to be a civil libertarian who also carries the Ronald Reagan flag of both “Strength at home, and non-intervention abroad”.  He wants “the federal government out of our lives”.   Ron Paul voted to authorize taking out Bin Laden in Afghanistan, but stop short from voting yes to invade Iraq.  He likes to point out that it was Ronald Reagan who pulled American troops out of Lebanon sighting the unpredictable nature of Middle Eastern passions and behavior.

Ron Paul likes to sight the founders often, and call himself “a champion of the Constitution” and “the most conservative member of Congress”.  In his speeches he reminds conservatives that George Washington’s wise foreign policy for America was to “trade with all nations, but make military entanglements with none”.  He reminds us of what conservative Eisenhower said about the power of the “Military Industrial Complex” and their desire to push for needless wars and military entanglements, which threatens our Constitutional Republic in which we have no Kings, no Caesars, and certainly no Marshall Laws.

He reminds us that the Cold War is over, that defending our borders is job one of the Federal Government.  He reminds of the Christian “Just War theory” which prohibits “preemptive wars of aggression”.  He said he would rather America pay for the high cost of oil at home, rather than paying with our blood.  He does not wish to see our red blooded American boys getting killed “in needless undeclared wars”.  Most of all, he reminds us of the wise words of Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater when he said, “Extremism in the defense of Liberty, is no vice”.
