Russia, Iran and Turkey Bigger Threat to US Troops in Syria Than ISIS?
by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)
According to the NYT, Pentagon commanders are "scrambling to protect their forces from…Turkey, Russia, Iran and the Syrian government, as well as their proxy forces (sic)."
Unaddressed by the Times is US-orchestrated aggression against sovereign Syria, using ISIS and other jihadists as proxy foot soldiers, supported by Pentagon-led terror-bombing — destroying vital infrastructure, killing civilians, and at times government troops.
US involvement in Syria flagrantly breaches the UN Charter and other international law. It's all about wanting the country transformed into a US client state, an Israeli rival eliminated, and Iran isolated.
No threat from ISIS to US and allied forces exists. While Russian and Syrian warplanes strike their positions, the US arms, funds, trains, and directs their fighters — NATO, Turkey, the Saudis and Israel involved in supporting them.
What concerns Trump regime hardliners, the Pentagon, and NYT is that Russia's intervention in Syria over four years ago changed the dynamic on the ground.
Greatly aided by its airpower, Syrian forces liberated most of the country. Idlib province remains the last US-supported terrorist stronghold.
On Sunday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said while the area's terrorist threat remains a festering issue, he expects the province to be liberated in the months ahead.
That's what US policymakers are concerned about. Their imperial designs on Syria failed. Instead of cutting their losses and leaving, they push on fruitlessly.
Trump yielded to bad advice, going along with continuing illegal US occupation of northern and southern Syria.
According to Times disinformation, US forces are "pursuing remnants" of ISIS. Pro-terrorism, not counterterrorism operations remain ongoing.
US war secretary Mark Esper said US troops will stay in Syria for years. "(T)here's no disposition plans that I'm tracking," he stressed
Trump earlier said US forces are in Syria "to protect the oil." They'll remain to "keep the oil."
According to a Deir Ezzor 24 blog on November 14 cited by Southfront, Saudi oil giant Aramco will invest in one of the province's large oil fields, saying:
"The investment will be done through contracts that will be signed by Aramco and the US government, whose forces control the majority of oil and gas fields in northeast Syria."
Weeks earlier, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman General Igor Konashenkov slammed US occupation of Syria's oil producing areas, saying:
"Neither international law, nor the American legislation…can justify the US troops' goal to guard Syrian hydrocarbon reserves from Syria…and its people," adding:
"Absolutely all hydrocarbon accumulations and other mineral resources located on the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic do not belong to the IS terrorists, and definitely not to the 'American defenders (of) IS terrorists,' but exclusively to the Syrian Arab Republic."
"Neither in international law, nor in American law itself — there has never been and there will never be a single legitimate task for the American troops — to protect and defend the hydrocarbon accumulations of Syria from Syria itself and its people."
"Therefore, what Washington is doing now, the seizure and armed control of oil fields in Eastern Syria, is, put it simply, an international state banditry."
"The real reason for this illegal US activity in Syria lies far from Washington's proclaimed ideals of freedom and counter-terrorism slogans."
"According to the presented images of the space intelligence of the Russian Defence Ministry, Syrian oil before and after the defeat of the IS terrorists on right bank of the Euphrates, under the (so-called) protection of the US military, was actively extracted and massively sent by fuel trucks for refining outside Syria."
"At the same time, Washington officially announced sanctions for the supply of petroleum products to Syria, which apply not only to American companies, but also any others."
"Under the protection of American military personnel and American PMC groups, fuel trucks from the oil fields of Eastern Syria are being smuggled to other states."
"In case of an attack on such a caravan, special operations forces and US military aviation are immediately involved to protect it."
"By the way, oil production itself is carried out using equipment provided by leading Western corporations bypassing all American sanctions."
"The oil exportation contract is implemented by the US-controlled company Sedkab, created under the so-called Autonomous Administration of Eastern Syria."
"And the income from the smuggling of Syrian oil through the brokerage companies interacting with it goes to the numbered account of American PMCs and the US intelligence agencies."
"Given that the cost of one barrel of Syrian smuggled oil is 38 US dollars, the monthly revenue of this 'private business' of American public services exceeds 30 million US dollars."
"For such a continuous financial flow, free from control and taxes of the American state, the Pentagon and Langley leadership will be ready to guard and defend oil wells in Syria from the mythical 'hidden cells of the IS' forever."
Separately, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad accused the Trump regime of selling stolen Syrian oil, saying thousands of US troops and private military contractors involved, adding:
"Before the Americans, in the early days Jabhat al-Nusra used these wells. After Daesh came and drove out al-Nusra, or rather when it merged with al-Nusra and they all became Daesh, it also stole and sold oil."
"Where? It used to sell it through Turkey. Now America is the one stealing oil and selling it to Turkey," adding:
"The US relies heavily on private military companies akin to Blackwater in this war."
"So even if they have several hundred American soldiers in Syria, they still have several thousands, maybe even tens of thousands of civilians working for these PMCs and fighting in Syria."
"Therefore, the exact figure is difficult to establish, but it is definitely several thousand people."
The Trump and Turkish regimes are silent about what's going on. Establishment media suppress it. Russian satellite data revealed it.
