Mission & Meaning

School Sucks Project is a podcast, You Tube channel, and on-line community dedicated to redefining education. We promote home-education, critical thinking, peaceful parenting, personal development and better communication strategies.

What education is:
a lifelong journey of seeking and integrating knowledge, intrinsically motivated and serving the needs of the individual learner
What education isn't:
compulsory, institutionalized schooling

My name is Brett Veinotte, and in my 12 years of teaching, school sucks has been perhaps the most common phrase I've heard students use to describe their feelings about "public education" or more appropriately, compulsory schooling. Yet this seemingly bitter and reductive slogan is actually quite clever.

School sucks is perhaps the most accurate and astute synopsis of the system I've ever heard. The 15,000-hour process of compulsory schooling has a dramatic effect on the mind of a child. When we first enter these institutions at age six, many of our best personal attributes are already in place. We are curious, innovative, unique, creative and hopeful in ways that we will rarely be able to replicate throughout the rest of our lives. But over time, school sucks those essential attributes out of too many of us...and replaces them with predictability, obedience and apathy.

Unfortunately, for over a century this process has been referred to as "education." It isn't. Our aim is to reclaim that word, to take it back from those who wish to use institutionalized schools (at all levels) to mold impressionable minds into desirable and predictable finished products. Education is a journey by the individual, for the individual.

School Sucks Across America – Outbound Tour Schedule

What education is:
a lifelong journey of seeking and integrating knowledge, intrinsically motivated and serving the needs of the individual learner
What education isn't:
compulsory, institutionalized schooling (and a lot of what's being taught in colleges)

Background
Brett Veinotte is a former teacher, teacher trainer and college admissions consultant. In 2009, after 10 years pf professional experience, he started the popular libertarian-leaning School Sucks Podcast. The central mission of School Sucks to make a clear distinction between schooling and education. The show offers weekly examples of what self-directed learning looks like, and aims to provide young people the building blocks of intellectual, financial and lifestyle independence.

On October 15th Brett will begin a trip across the country to interview listeners, parents and children about self-directed education, unschooling and alternatives to public school/higher education. The School Sucks Across America Tour will last over 40 days and it includes stops in over 30 cities across the country. Through a series of interviews, Brett aims to take "alternative education" out of the abstract and to bring real life examples to thousands of young people.

Why The School Sucks Message Matters Now
School and education are not synonyms. Look at the state of America's public schools. They are a failure even by their own metrics; achievement test scores have been flat for 30 years, while spending has skyrocketed. Worse yet, look at the level of discourse in our colleges and universities - students crying over Halloween costumes, fleeing into safe rooms filled with stuffed animals, demanding for protection from speech, shutting down controversial events, etc... It is painfully obvious that way too many young adults will be ill-prepared to thrive in the real world.

In the midst of these crises in public and (so-called) higher education, the School Sucks Across America Tour will broadcast a positive message about what happens when students and parents to take educational matters into their own hands, wherever and whenever possible.
