How Does Oscillococcinum work?
Consider taking the homeopathic preparation Oscillococcinum next time you start feeling achy, with fever and chills. An alternative medicine especially made for treating symptoms of flu, Oscillococcinum is made by Boiron, the well-respected, FDA-approved French homeopathic pharmacy. This medicine with the funny name, (o-sill-o-cox-see-num) is a natural product and easy to take. Sometimes referred to as Oscillo, this alternative remedy is believed to reduce symptoms of the flu, shorten the duration of the illness, and if taken early enough, when symptoms have not fully formed, it may abort a full-blown case of flu, according to RxList.com and HealthyLifeAlternativeMedicine.com.
What Is Ossilococcinum?
Ossilococcinum's active ingredient is an extract from duck liver and heart and is listed in the Homeopathic Pharmacopia of the United States (HPUS) as anas barbariae hepatis et cordis extractum 200K. (And you thought Ossilococcinum was hard to pronounce!) Homeopathy is based on the theory of the "law of similars," that "like treats like." In the "Organon of the Medical Art" by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, founder of homeopathy, he explains that homeopathic treatment utilizes a very tiny dose of a substance that produces characteristic symptoms of the disease being treated to cure the same disease in the patient. Waterfowl, chickens and various other fowl are a natural source of the flu virus.
How Does It Work?
HealthyLifeAlternativeMedicine.com explains that Oscillococcinum, like other homeopathic remedies, stimulates the person's own immune system to produce a reaction, thus calling up the body's own defenses. It should be taken at the first sign of symptoms and used as a first line of defense against flu.
Ossilococcinum comes in packages of three or six vials and is available at pharmacies, health-food and grocery stores. Package inserts recommend taking one complete vial and dissolving in the mouth, repeating every six hours. RxList.com points out that there is no evidence that this is a correct dose for this medicine. The appropriate dose is based on several factors, including the user's age, overall health and other conditions. Contacting a homeopathic practitioner for guidance regarding dosage is recommendedr.
Because Ossilococcinum is a homeopathic medicine, it is believed to be safe, with no known side effects, according to RxList.com.
2. Apple Cider Vinegar (Bragg's Raw, Unfiltered)
Vinegar Home Remedies
Flu Remedies are a very hot topic these days especially since the H1N1 or Swine Flu scare. Most people place their trust in the flu vaccine to keep them safe; Not very effective as I will discuss shortly.
The flu, more accurately known as "Influenza", is an infectious disease commonly associated with chills, sore throat, fever, aches and pains, coughing, weakness and overall discomfort.
You have probably also heard the flu virus referred to as grippe.
Apple cider vinegar has often been used effectively as a home remedy for flu. More about this further down the page but first ...
Some Cautionary Comments
Symptoms of the flu are often confused with "influenza-like" illnesses such as the common cold but are usually more severe; sometimes even fatal if your immune system is compromised such as in the case of the elderly or very young.
Do not be tempted to buy over the counter medications that treat the symptoms instead of the actual virus.
These types of medications may suppress the symptoms but they also interfere with your body's natural self-defense mechanism which could result in serious consequences.
Flu remedies should assist your body deal with the illness not interfere with its natural immune system.
Apple Cider Vinegar - The Flu Remedy
ACV has been used in flu remedies as well as other illnesses or conditions such as colds for centuries. It has been used successfully and safely against flu symptoms like cough, sore throat and sinus infection.
Colds and flu cause your body's pH to become slightly more acidic than healthy levels. Although apple cider vinegar itself is acidic, it has an alkaline effect which helps to balance out the pH level of your body.
Does that make sense to you? It didn't to me either; at least not at first.
The Acetic Acid Paradox
For most people it would seem rational that if you add vinegar to an acidic system it would only increase the acidity of the system.
I see comments to this effect in web blogs all over the internet and people turn away from vinegar because of them.
The people who make such comments are often quite insulting and use the term "science" to defend their position.
They say adding acid to acid can only result in stronger acid but ....
Sir Hans Adolf Krebs proved otherwise when he won the Nobel Prize in 1953. (see grey box at right)
If you have doubts, try it for yourself ...

3. Oregano Oil
Benefits Of Oregano Oil For Cold And Flu
Oregano oil is one of the best natural remedies if your immune system is under attack by a cold virus, the flu, respiratory infections, or any other illnesses. This is due to its expectorant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiseptic, and antioxidant properties. Beyond that, oregano oil treats both the symptoms and the underlying infection that caused the irritating symptoms in the first place. There are some side effects to the use of oregano oil, including stomach upset, topical irritation, allergic reactions and complications with pregnancy. Before using oregano oil for cold and flu symptoms, speak to a doctor about any potential risks.
What Is Oregano Oil?
This powerful oil is distilled from the dried leaves of the oregano plant, the most common variety of which is known as Origanum vulgare. While oregano is widely known as a delicious herb that packs a healthy punch when added to a wide variety of savory dishes, the concentrated oil of this herb is even more widely praised in certain parts of the world. Native to the Mediterranean region, oregano oil has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years, and is now widely available. This oil is dark yellow in color and has a very strong aroma, which is why some people choose to use it in culinary applications. However, as a therapeutic oil, oregano oil can be topically applied, sublingually used, consumed orally or inhaled, all of which can deliver an impressive list of benefits. These healthy effects of oregano oil for cold and flu can be attributed to the high levels of thymol and carvacrol, which are antioxidant phenolic compounds, as well as rosmarinic acid, various terpenes, zinc, calcium, potassium, vitamin A and vitamin C, among others.
Benefits Of Oregano Oil For Cold & Flu
If it feels as though your immune system is perpetually under attack, particularly during the cold season, you should begin using oregano oil for cold and flu symptoms, as it contains various compounds that will strengthen the immune system.
The most powerful compound in oregano oil is carvacrol, and it also comes with the highest concentration in this oil. Boasting numerous antimicrobial properties, this active ingredient is the main reason why this oil is so famed for eliminating symptoms of cold and flu. In fact, carvacrol is known to break through the outer cell membrane of bacteria, allowing them to be neutralized by the body's immune system.

Zinc—One of the Best Supplements to Help Fight Cold and Flu
Zinc is important to your body in many ways, including immunity, cell growth and division, sleep, mood, your senses of taste and smell, eye and skin health, insulin regulation, and male sexual function
Many are deficient in zinc due to mineral-depleted soils, drug effects, plant-based diets, and other diets high in grain
Zinc deficiency is associated with increased colds and flu, chronic fatigue, depression, acne, low birth weight babies, learning problems and poor school performance in children, among others
Foods highest in zinc are oysters, meat, poultry, nuts and seeds, and unsweetened chocolate (cacao)
A zinc supplement is a simple, inexpensive way to augment your dietary intake of this important mineral, but make sure you choose a chelated form to ensure absorbability
By Dr. Mercola
Now that daylight is waning, cold and flu bugs are ready to jump on any warm body not armed with a strong immune system. With so many novel herbs and supplements on the market, it's easy to lose sight of the basics for robust immune defenses.
One of those is the trace element zinc. Your body needs zinc every day in just the right amount, because too much can be as harmful as too little. Your body has no way to store zinc, so it depends on a daily supply through diet. Zinc is important for a number of life-sustaining functions, including:
Important component of the enzymes involved in tissue remodeling and prevention of cancer
Maintenance of your mood, mental clarity and restorative sleep
Prostate and intestinal health
Senses of taste and smell
Zinc is a constituent of at least 3,000 different proteins in your body and a component of more than 200 different enzymes. In fact, zinc is involved in more enzymatic reactions in your body than any other mineral. Zinc increases your production of white blood cells and helps them fight infection more effectively. It also increases killer cells that combat cancer, helps your immune system release more antibodies, and supports wound healing.
Could You Be Deficient in Zinc?
Mild zinc deficiency is relatively common, especially in infants and children, pregnant or breast-feeding women, elderly, people with poor gastrointestinal absorption or bowel disease like Crohn's disease, and for those eating vegetarian or vegan diets. A number of factors contribute to the overall problem of zinc deficiency:
Years of commercial farming practices, such as monocropping (planting large expanses of land with the same crop year after year), have left our soils deficient in natural minerals, like zinc.
Certain drugs deplete your body of zinc, such as ACE inhibitors, thiazide diuretics, and acid-reducing drugs like Prliosec and Pepcid.
Certain diets, such as vegetarian/vegan diets and high-grain diets, are low in bioavailable zinc and high in phytic acids, which further impair zinc absorption.
Mild zinc deficiency can lead to frequent colds and flu, chronic fatigue, and poor general health. In your child, when growth and development are vitally dependent on good nutrition, inadequate zinc can result in mood disturbances, poor memory, impaired learning and poor school performance. Zinc deficiency can also contribute to acne and poor eyesight. Chronic zinc deficiency can affect eyesight, taste, smell, and memory. White spots on your fingernails can indicate you're not getting enough zinc.

5. Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice (aka Papa Juice)
