The kid was exercising his freedom. If he didn't have the freedom to do it, he COULDN'T have done it - essentially to himself.

If traffic signs were only warning signs, and we had an eye-for-an-eye type justice system, everybody would take care. If they were of a mind to be careless, they would be dead - by execution if not directly from their own recklessness. The whole traffic system would correct itself and we could reduce the police force.
