Unexpectedly?  Does that mean that (a) retail sales were high all along and suddenly fell in December?  Or (b) that somebody was stupid and/or blind enough not to have noticed that alas! the country is in a depression and the sheep that the retailers count on to make their day don't have jobs or money to over-consume anymore.

If there's a silver lining in this, let's hope is that over-consumerism goes the way of the dinosaurs and, in particular, that shopping for plastic crap at Wal Mart with money they don't have to celebrate the birth of someone who was never born shit.
