President Obama said his team would use "every single available resource" to contain the Gulf of Mexico oil slick, including dispatching teams from the Pentagon if necessary.
Officials from Homeland Security, the Interior Department and the Environmental Protection Agency have been sent to the region to confront what Obama called "the BP oil spill."
British Petroleum, which operates the rig where an explosion led to the oil spill, will pay the response and clean-up costs, Obama said.
The government's efforts are designed "to ensure that BP and the entire U.S. government is doing everything possible, not just to respond to this incident, but also to determine its cause," Obama said.
