AUSTIN, Texas --In what may be one of the most striking examples of the left hand of one government agency not knowing what the right hand of another government agency is doing, two different government offices - one in Washington and the other in Austin - issued news releases essentially simultaneously Thursday afternoon, one noting a Houston-based company has been nominated for a prestigious national award, the other stating the same company is being charged with fraud.
Meanwhile, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott's office put out a notice that it charged TaxMasters, Inc., and its chief executive officer, Patrick Cox, with multiple violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act and Texas Debt Collection Act.
