First of 33 trapped Chilean miners rescued (VIDEO)

• AP

The first of 33 miners trapped underground for more than two months in Chile was rescued early Wednesday.

A capsule containing miner Florencio Avalos broke the surface at 12:10 a.m. local time as a crowd cheered. He climbed out of the rescue capsule and was immediately embraced by rescue workers and others, as bystanders cheered and clapped.

He stepped out of a rescue capsule amid sobs from his young son and received a bracing bear hug from Chilean President Sebastian Pinera.
