Moon crash kicks up ice, silver, mercury: NASA

• Reuters

A rocket sent crashing into the Moon last year kicked up several hundred pounds (kg) of water, silver, mercury and other surprising chemicals, scientists reported on Thursday.

The U.S. space agency NASA sent the rocket to the permanently shadowed moon crater Cabeus last October to see what would, literally, pop up.

Ah, dammit -- the guy who posted this story already made a Moonbase Alpha reference! Assuming that NASA's account is valid, rather than simply a PR move to stave off budget cuts, this find suggests that it's very possible to create a self-sustaining settlement on Luna. It would be magnificent to see a private firm (perhaps a consortium of international investors) get there first.
