Stocks Rise, Led by Materials; Dow Hits 13,000

Stocks gained Tuesday, with the Dow briefly breaking above the psychologically-important 13,000 level for the first time in almost four years, led by gains in materials and as investors cheered the Greek deal.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied to touch the key 13,000 level for the first time since May 2008, led by Kraft [KFT  38.71    0.70  (+1.84%)   ] and Alcoa [AA  10.4901    0.3401  (+3.35%)   ], after logging a robust gain in the previous week. Wal-Mart [WMT  60.01    -2.47  (-3.95%)   ] weighed on the blue-chip index.
 
McDonald's [MCD  100.49    0.50  (+0.5%)   ] and Home Depot [HD  47.02    0.31  (+0.66%)   ] have both surged over 60 percent since the last time the blue-chip index traded above the 13,000 level in May 2008. Meanwhile, BofA [BAC  8.178    0.158  (+1.97%)   ] and Alcoa have plunged almost 80 percent each.
