Zimmerman's bail set at $1M in Trayvon Martin case

• AP

The neighborhood watch volunteer who killed Trayvon Martin can be released from jail on $1 million bond while he awaits trial on a second-degree murder charge, a judge ruled Thursday.

Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester granted bond to George Zimmerman for a second time. Lester had revoked Zimmerman's $150,000 bond last month after prosecutors told the judge Zimmerman and his wife misled the court about how much money they had during an April bond hearing.

You are missing the point anyway.  Bail is a Right, not a privilege.  Everyone detained is entitled to not just bail, but it cannot be excessive.  Unfortunately, the get tough on crime crazies who are also the ones cheering for the stand y0ur ground laws have gotten many a state to pass restrictions on the common law concept of bail.  In Zimmerman's case the mere charging with second degree murder in FL killed his chances of automatic bail.

The purpose of bail is to assure the appearance of the accused.  Conditions for release and good behavior may be dictated to protect witnesses and victims.  And the arrested's threat to the community can be gaged in whether or not to permit bail.  Note from above the only monetary consideration is the amount that ensures appearing before the court when necessary.  This is not based upon ability to pay.  So the amount should reflect the costs of hunting a bail jumper down, nothing more which caa be estimated and applied as a fixed amount with pretty good accuracy.  Instead it is a punitive and highly variable  amount sought by prosecutors and gleefully granted by judges with the intent to bankrupt the defendant and prevent them from using their financial resources in their defense against an unlimited state.

Why does not the media provide an up to date picture of Trayvon Martin?

How many tatoos did he have?

Why are all the questions aimed at Zimmerman's guilt?

What is Trayvon's history?

Why is the system punishing him already for trying to protect himself while performing a duty to the community, the donations were meant for his defense not for his bond?

Why was Trayvon Martin passing through a gated community?
