Democratic strategist James Carville on Monday wondered why Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney thought he could “get away” with having offshore investments.
“If you wanna be president, get rid of the Swiss bank accounts,” Carville told Current TV host Eliot Spitzer.
Romney, who earned a fortune through his equity firm Bain Capital, hides his wealth in offshore tax havens in Switzerland and in the Cayman Islands, according to a report by Vanity Fair.
“He wants it both ways,” Carville added. “He wants to make the money on the offshore accounts, you know, but he wants to be president. You can’t do it both ways. It’s kind of one set of rules that applies to Mitt Romney, and then the same set of rules apply to everybody else.”
