The suspect is believed to be a student, Kern County Sheriff's spokesperson Ray Pruitt told AP.

The shooting occurred around 9am local time.

According to reports, the first person shot was airlifted to the hospital. The second person denied medical treatment.

A Sheriff's spokesman told AP that one student was shot at the high school. It remains unclear who the other victim was.

Students hid in closets and phoned local media, according to ABC 23.

Officials from the Kern County Sheriff's Department went room-by-room to secure the school, and students were evacuated to the football field.
