You forgot the part about what people do when they lose a job. Some go on welfare and food stamps. But it is increasingly difficult to live on welfare and food stamps without some other form supplemental income these days.
Others who lose their job, while on welfare, earn under-the-table. Some go to under-the-table, or they start their own business, without going on welfare.
