Before you yawn at yet another mail app and yet another weather app, give them a gander. Yahoo is taking a completely user-centric approach to product creation, mobile chief Adam Cahan said. After looking at what users have been doing with its current mobile apps and figuring out why they’re doing it, Yahoo has honed in on new ways to optimize user experience — and make them look pretty darn good in the process.
Take Yahoo! Mail’s tablet app, for instance. The team found most tablet owners spend a lot of time reading email in the morning, in the evening and on weekends. Despite the amount of time spent reading email, it is surprising so few tablet email apps offer full-screen viewing. Yahoo! Mail offers a chrome-less fullscreen viewing mode that gives way to iBook- or Flipboard-style page flipping, allowing you to flick through your email page by page, as it were. If page flipping isn’t your style, you can tap the edge of the screen to navigate from one email to the next.
