Giant forest swastika discovered in trees; Nazi mystery puzzles onlookers

The Nazi symbol was finally discovered in 1992 when an intern for a landscaping company began examining aerial photographs of the area to document irrigation lines, the New York Daily News reports.

After its initial discovery, unearthings of other forest swastikas began to pop up across Germany, as well as in other parts of the world, leading to, as the New York Daily News report refers to it, a “modern [horticultural] whodunit.” A retrospective about this new representation of the infamous emblem of hate was published by the German newspaper, Der Spiegel.
