The CIA has revealed a new interest to the American public: altering the climate to impact climate change. The agency plans to spend $630,000 on a study that will determine whether geoengineering can be used to modify Earth’s climate, Mother Jones reports. The National Academy of Sciences is running the 21-month-long project, the first NAS geoengineering study sponsored by an intelligence agency. Scientists involved in the study will examine how humans can impact weather patterns, assess the dangers of impacting the climate and examine the national security threat associated with geoengineering techniques. NAS and the CIA are splitting the funding for the project, the results of which hold interest for both organizations.
