Climate change triggers rising violence, study warns

Many of history’s most powerful kingdoms and empires unraveled as long-term climate warming got under way, and we had better be on guard against twenty-first-century world civilization meeting the same fate, a new study warns. The authors, who based their report on the conclusions of several dozen previous studies, wrote that violent human behavior increases markedly when temperatures rise and precipitation patterns change as they are right now.

The authors include Solomon Hsiang, a Princeton University professor of science, economics, environment, and technology; and two University of California-Berkeley economics professors: Marshall Burke and Edward Miguel. For their report, which they published Thursday in Science, they reviewed a body of studies that covered the history of most regions of the world over the past 10,000 years.
