Honduran Army kills indigenous leader who opposed massive dam

• The Liberty Beat
The Lenca are currently resisting the building of Agua Zarca hydroelectric dam on River Gualcaeque and have faced a barrage of violence from both the Honduran Army and what they claim are local hitmen hired by top executives of the company Desarrollo Energético Sociedad Anónima (DESA)- which is in charge of the project. On July 15th Tomas Garcia, who was part of his community’s Indigenous and Auxiliary Council and of the National Council of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), was shot as the Army fired indiscriminately at protesters. Berta Caceres, leader of COPINH, called the act a “a desperate and criminal reaction”.
