The HB-235 requires all doctors to check for a heartbeat before attempting to perform an abortion. If any heartbeat is detected and the doctor continues on with performing the abortion, they would be charged with a third-degree felony of up to five years in prison, probation and fines.
"Consider the rights of that unborn baby," said Republican Rep. Mike Hill, who sponsored the bill. My oath said that I would protect life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Life being the first one."
The new legislation will also change the definition of an "unborn fetus" to an "unborn human being," which many physicians have disagreed on for decades. Planned Parenthood's Kimberly Scott says that this is – "the most dangerous bill that we have seen for reproductive health in the Florida legislature."
