Ex-Cop Charged With 2nd-Degree Manslaughter in Wright Shooting

Potter will be charged 3 days after Wright was killed during a traffic stop. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported.

Potter, 48, was a 26-year veteran of the Brooklyn Center Police Department before tendering her resignation after shooting Wright on Sunday, grabbing her handgun instead of her Taser as he was resisting and fleeing.

An attorney for Potter did not immediately respond to messages from The Associated Press.

Former Police Chief Tim Gannon has said Potter, a 26-year veteran and training officer, had intended to use her Taser on Wright but fired her handgun instead. However, protesters and Wright's family members say there is no excuse for the shooting and it shows how the justice system is tilted against Blacks, noting Wright was stopped for expired car registration and ended up dead.
