Most Americans remain frustrated as they see overpopulation overwhelming cities throughout the United States. Traffic grows intolerable. Everyone must breathe polluted air. Everything costs more. Instead of getting better; everything gets worse. Drivers in Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta and New York must be losing their minds! “What can I do?” they ask. “Why isn’t anyone doing something to stop this madness of growth, growth and still more growth?” they ask.
Unfortunately, the ‘America’ we knew fades into the rearview mirrors and the emerging ‘America’ stands to add 100 million more people within 25 years. In a simple statement: that number of people cannot be sustained if any of us hope to pass on the standard of living and quality of life we took for granted.
In the end, it comes down to what ‘you’ do in your day-to-day life and what actions ‘you’ take at the national and international levels to ‘push’ overpopulation to the forefront of our media and leaders. Those actions will secure a sane future for your children. Remember that everything you do ‘counts’ and everything you fail to do ‘counts’ even more in a negative manner.
In the United States, the most effective organizations are www.NumbersUSA.com where you can fax pre written letters to your reps. Also, distribute “Immigration by the Numbers” with Roy Beck which is a 14 minute highly educational video that shows what we face and how to change it. In California, Dr. Diana Hull’s www.capsweb.org will give you personal power and the ability to fax reps also. Join www.TheSocialContract.com for incredible information and action steps. Join www.fairus.org to make your voice heard.
At the end of this column, you may join any of the organizations that will give you enormous power to help change the course of history.
The following message is from Ed Barry, Sustainable Living Advisor to the Population Institute. Please respond to Ed at: email@example.com.
“We have initiated a project to insert sustainability into the ‘job description’ of our federal government,” said Barry. “For a number of reasons we think it is critically important that the nation is aware of, and periodically addresses, the following question; “Is the United States on an environmentally sustainable course?”
The sobering answer to that question: No, we are not!
“The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) provides the basis for this position,” said Barry. “This legislation, passed over 40 years ago, included sustainability goals. Specifically the authors of NEPA made reference to a proper balance between our population and resource use, and also to our inter-generational environmental responsibilities.
“Unfortunately, the reporting requirements set up under NEPA have never addressed these sustainability goals or the above question. The Council of Environmental Quality (CEQ) was charged with the responsibility of producing an annual Environmental Quality Report (EQR), but the annual reports that were produced and transmitted to Congress never actually addressed this macro-sustainability question. The annual EQRs were discontinued in 1995.
“The executive branch, and specifically the CEQ, is in the process of taking “Steps to Modernize and Reinvigorate the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).” The public comment opportunity that is associated with this executive branch initiative gives us an opening to make the point that long-term macro-sustainability concepts should be included in national environmental quality evaluation and reporting processes, and that meaningful annual environmental reporting to the nation should be re-established.
“The two documents attached to this message provide 1. Additional background information on the subject and 2. A first draft “Call to Action.” The latter document is a preliminary draft, offered for discussion purposes and as a way to begin the collaborative process of collecting thoughts, comments, and other suggestions for improvement.
“Please let us know your thoughts on this subject, whether or not your organization wishes to participate in (and/or endorse) this collaborative activity, and your suggestions about others who might be interested in this effort. We hope to assemble a sizable group of participants and endorsers. We have already received substantial positive interest in this endeavor, and there is a good possibility (thanks to the support and efforts of the National Council on Science and the Environment), that our recommendations will ultimately be presented in person to members of the President’s Council on Environmental Quality.”
If any of us, no matter what our race, creed or color might be, refuse to engage our U.S. Congress as we have not for 30 years as to the population/immigration equation—our children will find themselves living in a terribly degraded America where the American Dream will be described by the history books as a ‘fleeting fantasy’ from the era of 1950 to 2010.
