New White House Communications Director
by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)
Hope Hicks is Trump's third communications director in less than eight months, following Mike Dubke and Anthony Scaramucci - fired after 10 days.
Hicks is likely to fare better, assuming a role she's had for years. She's Trump's longest-serving political aide.
Last December, she was appointed White House Director of Strategic Communications. Earlier she served as press secretary and communications director for Trump's campaign, then press secretary for his transition team.
Beginning in 2012, she did PR work for Ivanka Trump's fashion business and various Trump ventures.
In August 2014, she joined the Trump Organization full-time, becoming press secretary in January 2015, involved in planning Trump's presidential run, announced mid-year.
Last August, she was appointed interim White House Communications Director, made permanent on Tuesday. It's likely to stick, given her long association with Trump.
She's one of his most trusted aides, involved with his political campaign from inception.
As White House communications director, she's responsible for developing and promoting Trump's agenda, including his media campaign and public addresses.
Her appointment needs no Senate confirmation. In 1969 under Richard Nixon, the office was established, Herbert Klein its first director.
The position requires working closely with White House press and cabinet-level secretaries - representing the president's worldview with a consistent message.
With the importance of online communications, present-day dissemination of information has more ways to present the president's agenda than decades earlier.
Other Trump appointments include columnist Mercedes Schlapp, named Director of Strategic Communications. Jessica Ditto is expected to remain Deputy Director of Communications.
Raj Shah was named principal deputy press secretary, Steven Cheung appointed strategic response director.
