Netanyahu Defiantly Vows Illegal Settlements Here to Stay

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Israeli settlements are flagrantly illegal, built on stolen Palestinian land.

Fourth Geneva, Article 49, prohibits an occupying power from transferring its citizens to territory it occupies.

Post-WW I Hague Regulations prohibit an occupying power from making permanent changes in occupied areas unless agreed to and benefit the affected population.

Settlements infringe on Palestinian self-determination, the right to control their borders, air space, offshore waters and resources, free from occupation.

Numerous UN resolutions declared Israeli settlements illegal. Expanding them continues anyway.

On Monday, at an event commemorating 50 years of West Bank settlements, Netanyahau blustered:

"We are here to stay forever. There will be no more uprooting of settlements in the land of Israel. This is the inheritance of our ancestors. This is our land," calling it "a strategic asset for the State of Israel."

"We've uprooted settlements," referring to strategically withdrawing from Gaza while expanding West Bank settlements at the same time.

He lied claiming withdrawal from any settlements would endanger Israel and "the entire Middle East."

Israel's existence poses the region's greatest threat, along with America's presence. Along with occupation harshness and numerous other issues, settlements bear testimony to Israeli lawlessness.

They're a core Palestinian issue. Netanyahu spoke days after meeting with Trump's team, aiming to restart no-peace, peace talks.

PA official Nabil Shaath reiterated Palestinian demands for "the end of the occupation, the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, as well as the resolution of all permanent status issues, including the right return for (diaspora) refugees."

Israel demands Palestinian submission to its demands, offering nothing in return, why peace talks accomplish nothing equitable every time initiated.

Trump's team reportedly asked for a three-to-four month grace period to prepare a new plan.

Anything "new" will likely resemble rejected earlier ones. Washington and Israel won't permit equity and justice for Palestinians.

Differences between both sides are irreconcilable. Nothing in prospect suggests any possibly of a breakthrough short of unconditional Palestinian surrender to Israeli demands.
