Professor Kinealy has written a number of books on modern Ireland, with a focus on the Great Hunger. These include, This Great Calamity. The Great Irish Famine 1845-52 (Gill and Macmillan, 1994 and 2006), Repeal and Revolution. 1848 in Ireland (Manchester University Press, 2009), and Daniel O’Connell and Abolition. The Saddest People the Sun Sees (Pickering and Chatto, 2011). Her most recent book is, ‘Charity and the Great Hunger in Ireland. The Kindness of Strangers’ (Bloomsbury, 2013).
Professor Kinealy has lectured throughout the world on the Great Famine. In 1997, she was invited to speak both in the British Houses of Parliament and in the American Congress. In 2013, she was awarded the Ambassador for Ireland Award, which must be approved by the government of the Republic of Ireland, and is given to a person responsible for promoting and fostering relationships between Ireland and the U.S. In March 2014, she was inducted into the Irish American Hall of Fame alongside Chris Matthews and Bill O’Reilly.
