LEX 18 Investigates: Ridesharing Companies Don't Adhere To Taxi Laws

Taxi services are highly regulated in Kentucky, but Uber and Lyft - two mobile-phone-based technology companies that connect drivers to people who need a ride - are drawing ire from government officials and traditional cab companies who say they are skirting the law.

And there is some question of whether passengers are covered if they get into an accident while riding in a rideshare car. LEX 18 Investigates called several insurance companies - including Geico, State Farm, Farmer's and Kentucky Farm Bureau - that said they could not insure a for-hire driver, even under a commercial policy.

Critics say the average user probably doesn't know that.

"If a person gets into a ride-share car, they should at least know or have the availability of knowing if they have insurance or if they do not," said Abe Owen, co-founder of LexCab, a traditional Lexington-based cab company.
