Foreclosures rise, driven by loss of jobs and income
08-21-2009
•
McClatchy News
Delinquency and foreclosure rates for U.S. mortgages continued to
rise in the second quarter, with loans to the most qualified borrowers
going bust at an unnerving clip, especially in hard-hit states such as
Florida and California.
The numbers reported by
the Mortgage Bankers Association show clearly that rising job losses
are worsening the nation's housing troubles and threaten the Obama
administration's efforts to keep owners from losing their homes.

Calif. Assembly balks at early release of inmates
08-21-2009
•
AP
California Assembly Speaker Karen Bass plans to strip the most
controversial provisions from a Senate-approved plan that would have
trimmed the state's prison population by 27,000 inmates. The Assembly version would keep about 10,000 more inmates behind bars
and leave the state with a new, nearly $200 million budget hole, Bass
said early Friday.

Mayor who can't balance his budget, vows to get tough on seedy massage parlors
08-21-2009
•
Arizona Republic
Smith and City Manager Chris Brady dismissed the argument that the illegitimate parlors are "victimless" operations.
Regardless of the morality of what goes on in their back rooms,
Smith said, "The way they are operating destroys other people's
businesses. That has nothing to do with the morality in play. As a city
we have the responsibility to protect people's rights, and when
businesses are being destroyed by the way someone else operates, we
have a real problem."

C.I.A. Uses Blackwater to Put Bombs on Drones
08-21-2009
•
NY Times
Blackwater has assumed a role in Washington’s most important counterterrorism program: the use of remotely piloted drones to kill Al Qaeda’s leaders. Carried out at hidden bases in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where the
company’s contractors assemble and load Hellfire missiles and 500-pound
laser-guided bombs on remotely piloted Predator aircraft.

THE GRIM REAPING OF AMERICA
08-21-2009
•
Jeff Head
BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA is an avowed socialist, openly implementing marxist dogma and ideology to our free market and our constitutional republic as a whole.
Every initiative, act, and plan that he is proposing and implmenting, from the disaterous stimuls plan, to the socialistic and power grabbing bail-outs/takeovers, to the monstrosity Health Care Plan, to the Cap & Trade horror, to his dishonest and genocidal abortion positions and plans, is meant to destroy the free market and fundamental Republican principle...and to then build a command economy on their ashes. A command economy is the type of economy Karl Marx proposed and the type of economy that has had such deadly and disasterous results anywhere else on earth it has been attempted, whether the former Soviet Union, Red China, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, or any other marxist hell-hole in Africa, Asia, or Central and South America.

Arizona quits Enhanced Drivers Licenses, while PASS Act moving in Senate
08212009
•
beatTheChip.blogspot.com
Last week, the governor of Arizona signed H.B. 2426, which bars the state from implementing the “enhanced” drivers license (EDL) program.
If the federal REAL ID revival bill (PASS ID) becomes law, it will give congressional approval to EDLs, which up to now have been simply a creation of the federal security and state driver licensing bureaucracies.

Here Comes Trouble: Three Problems
08-21-2009
•
The Market Ticker
The CBO's annual Social Security Update is out, and its pretty ugly:
This is pretty ugly; we were not supposed to have a negative income-to-outlay view on Social Security for another decade or so.
Well, the recession fixed that. Tax receipts are in the toilet but outlays sure aren't.
This is a major problem - everyone wants to point to the "zero hour" for Social Security when the "trust fund" goes negative, as is shown in this graph:
This, unfortunately, is terribly misleading. The Social Security "Trust Fund" contains nothing other than IOUs. That is, it does not contain money, it contains "special" Treasury Bonds that form part of the "public debt."
How much? According to Treasury, about $4.3 trillion dollars worth.

AP
Penny-pinching Americans are getting cold feet at the checkout "
thinking twice about spending and ditching items before they're rung up. They're leaving sweaters in the dress department, dumping cookies near
the grocery cashier and waiting until the last minute to judge needs
versus wants. Online, shoppers are consumers are abandoning their

Detainees Shown CIA Officers' Photos
08-21-2009
•
Washington Post
The Justice Department recently questioned military defense attorneys
at Guantanamo Bay about whether photographs of CIA personnel, including
covert officers, were unlawfully provided to detainees charged with
organizing the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Lawyers were apparently
attempting to identify CIA officers and contractors involved in the
agency's interrogation of al-Qaeda suspects in facilities outside the
United States, where the agency employed harsh techniques.

The Other Evil Brother

Economic Policy Journal
Yuri Maltsev on the brother of President Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel:
Now we in the United States are being prepared for discrimination in treatment of the elderly when it comes to healthcare. Ezekiel Emanuel is director of the Clinical Bioethics Department at the US National Institutes of Health and an architect of Obama's healthcare-reform plan. He is also the brother of Rahm Emanuel, Obama's White House chief of staff. Foster Friess reports that Ezekiel Emanuel has written that health services should not be guaranteed to

Obamacare could cost you $4,000 a year
If the public insurance option is dropped, that's likely
08-20-2009
•
CNN
(Someone has to PAY for those back room drug meetings!)
The conclusion is shocking. Middle- and upper-middle class Americans could face an enormous increase in their premiums. The hit could easily approach $4,000 for someone earning less than $90,000 -- or more than double that increase as soon as the worker's pay hits six figures. That's because Obama's plan would collect hundreds of billions of dollars in new taxes at the expense of medium earners, and re-channel the money into subsidies for the uninsured, low-income earners, and union retirees over age 55.
And those big new taxes would pay for gold-plated plans that would become required coverage for everyone, whether they like it or not. "This is a tax game designed to squeeze money out of the middle class," says Joseph Antos, a health-care economist at the conservative American Enterprise Institute.

Giffords votes on Health Care
08-21-2009
•
papatodd
Gabbby Giffords gave an interview to the Arizona Star. In the transcript you will find this quote
GIFFORDS: But you know, it’s just a critical time right now. We’ll get through this. Honestly with all of you, if we’re able to pass healthcare reform where Americans are able to give affordable health insurance and people are not denied because of their pre-existing conditions, we are able to drive costs down so we actually can continue afford to have Medicare and Social Security and those federal programs. If I don’t come back in two years, I’ve done my job. For me, to actually be able to accomplish that I think would be tremendous.

Ray McGovern: My Take
Putting Out Contracts on Folks, Sans Contract
08-21-2009
Ray McGovern
CIA operative Gary Schroen said Cofer Black sent him to Afghanistan with orders to "Capture bin Laden, kill him, and bring his head back in a box on dry ice." As for other al Qaeda leaders, Black reportedly said, "I want their heads up on pikes."
Schroen had been stunned that, for the first time in 30 years of service, he had received orders to kill targets rather than to capture them. Black would not confirm the exact words of the order to Schroen, but did not dispute Schroen’s account.

Danger For the Dollar
Bill Bonner
The dollar will probably go up. Still, we’d stay away…
Here is Warren Buffett’s view:
“Last fall, our financial system stood on the brink of a collapse
that threatened a depression. The crisis required our government to
display wisdom, courage and decisiveness. Fortunately, the Federal
Reserve and key economic officials in both the Bush and Obama
administrations responded more than ably to the need.
