Friday Newsdump: Deficit Projections Upped By $1.9 Trillion

The Business Insider
Comment mine -and where oh where is obamageddon while America rots? Vacation whee!
Earlier this week it came out that this year's deficit numbers would be reduced by about $262 billion. But bad news long term. The Obama administration is upping its 10-year deficit forecast to $9 trillion from $7.9 trillion over the next two years.
And of course they waited until end-of-market on Friday to do it, though we can't blame them for that.

Uh Oh: China Doesn't Want To Lend Us Money Anymore
08-22-2009
•
The Business Insider
The United States needs to borrow nearly $10 trillion over the next decade, including about $1.6 trillion this year.
Where's it going to come from?
This is a critical question, because resistance on the part of creditors will drive up interest rates, clobbering the housing market and demolishing the value of whatever cash savings Americans have left. The other answer--our government lending the money to itself--will destroy the value of the dollar, and that wouldn't help too many people, either (except debtors--it would help debtors because they will be able to repay nominal debts with toilet-paper dollars.
For now, the money we're borrowing is coming from somewhere, thankfully. But it's not coming from China, which has funded our spending for most of the past decade. As you can see in the chart above from the NYT, China's absolute purchases of Treasury debt continued to rise through last year, but the percentage of our borrowing that China is funding is s

[sweet!] One counterprotester, the only one within
shouting distance, would only give his first name as he stood

holding a contrary sign.
TEA Party members railed against proposed health care reforms Saturday at a busy intersection in Scottsdale.
They came from all over that morning, thinly crowded on the four corners of Scottsdale and Camelback roads.

Congressman Eric Massa represents the 29th district of New York and held the first of a series of Health Care town hall meetings about Health Care.
He was faced with a split crowd of supporters and opponents and conducted a remarkable Town Hall meeting in the face of a large vocal contingent.
In this clip he listens to a doctor say that the government is restricting who can attend medical school and is closing hospitals. Then goes on and buys the Talking point that the government will kill her mother. More..video:

Video: Assisted Suicide: State Plan Foreshadows Obamacare Government Healthcare Takeover

(R.I.P. Barbara Wagner, who died Oct. '08) Look to Oregon State plan to see what Obamacare's national government takeover of healthcare has in store for us.
Taking a different approach than the dr. representing the Oregon Health Plan in the video, we have a quote from a decent doctor:
"People deserve relief of their suffering, not giving them an overdose," said Dr. William Toffler.
He said the state has a financial incentive to offer death instead of life: Chemotherapy drugs such as Tarceva cost $4,000 a month while drugs for assisted suicide cost less than $100. News video:

This fall, U.S. law enforcement personnel will have their final chance to take advantage of a rare opportunity. Participants will travel to Israel to receive "homeland security training," but the counterterrorism briefings and martial arts practice sessions are only one part of the package. The program also includes visits to Christian religious sites in the Holy Land " an aspect likely to be especially attractive to Christian Zionists " along with other sites such as the Knesset and the Israeli "security fence".

Mexico decriminalized small amounts of marijuana, cocaine and heroin

Prosecutors
said the new law sets clear limits that keep Mexico's corruption-prone
police from shaking down casual users and offers addicts free treatment
to keep growing domestic drug use in check.
"This is not
legalization, this is regulating the issue and giving citizens greater
legal certainty," said Bernardo Espino del Ca

Obama to raise 10-year deficit to $9 trillion
08-22-2009
•
Reuters
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration will raise its
10-year budget deficit projection to approximately $9 trillion from
$7.108 trillion in a report next week, a senior administration official
told Reuters on Friday.
The higher deficit figure, based on updated economic data, brings
the White House budget office into line with outside estimates and
gives further fuel to President Barack Obama's opponents, who say his spending plans are too expensive in light of budget shortfalls.
The White House took heat for sticking with its $7.108 trillion
forecast earlier this year after the Congressional Budget Office
forecast that deficits between 2010 and 2019 would total $9.1 trillion.

Key Dems' Ethical Clouds Could Haunt Pelosi
08-22-2009
•
Time
One of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's favorite boasts is that she "cleaned out the swamp of Washington," a none too subtle swipe at what she calls the G.O.P.'s "culture of corruption" as evidenced by imprisoned former Rep. Duke Cunningham, disgraced Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff or the coterie of members he tainted, including Rep. Bob Ney who is also in prison and former Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who is still fighting charges that he violated Texas campaign finance laws. Unfortunately for Pelosi, the Democrats' record is far from clean, and her bold words could well come back to haunt her and her party in next year's midterm elections.
According to Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a congressional watchdog group, 15 lawmakers are currently under investigation for allegedly violating ethical standards. Of those four are Republicans and 11 are Democrats. That doesn't even include former Louisiana Rep. William Jefferson, wh

Reason
"For with thee is the fountain of life; in thy light shall we see the public option."
Yes, it's finally come to this. We've dragged the Almighty Lord into the debate. It's Yahweh or the highway.
This week, President Barack Obama claimed his version of health care reform is "a core ethical and moral obligation," beseeching religious leaders to promote his government-run scheme. Questioning the patriotism of opponents, apparently, wasn't gaining the type of traction advocates of "reform" had hoped.
"I know there's been a lot of misinformation in this debate, and there are some folks out there who are frankly bearing false witness," Obama said, invoking the frightening specter of the Ten Commandments.
On Team Righteous, we have those who meet their moral obligations; on the other squad, we must have the minions of Beelzebub"by which, of course, we mean profit-driven, child-killing, mob-inciting insurance companies.

In New Phase of Crisis, Securities Sink Banks
08-21-2009
•
WSJ
U.S. banks have been dying at the fastest rate since 1992, mainly because of bad loans they made. Now the banking crisis is entering a new stage, as lenders succumb to large amounts of toxic loans and securities they bought from other banks.
Federal officials on Thursday were poised to seize Guaranty Financial Group Inc., in what would be the 10th-largest bank failure in U.S. history, and broker a sale of the Texas bank to Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA of Spain. Guaranty's woes were caused by its investment portfolio, stuffed with deteriorating securities created from pools of mortgages originated by some of the nation's worst lenders.

JW Sues Treasury for Records on TARP Funds Distributed to Boston Bank after Intervention by Rep. Bar

Judicial Watch
Barney Frank is no stranger to scandal. As you may recall, Judicial Watch uncovered documents proving that Frank was well aware of massive problems at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, even while he blocked attempts by Congress to rein them in. Frank, of course, has been the beneficiary of tens of thousands of dollars from the two mortgage giants over the last decade in campaign contributions, which might help explain why he allowed the Fannie and Freddie to run wild.
(As you may recall, just weeks ago, Frank called on Fannie and Freddie to relax mortgage standards yet again, even though such risky lending practices facilitated the collapse of the economy.)
Now there is a fresh influence peddling scandal brewing, this time involving the allocation of funds from TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program).

Failed banks mount; Ga, Ala banks shut
08-22-2009
•
Forbes
The toll of failed banks is mounting, with 80 institutions closed by regulators so far this year - the most since 1992 at the height of the savings-and-loan crisis.
The latest came Friday with the seizures of two small banks in Georgia and one in Alabama: ebank, located in Atlanta, with $143 million in assets and $130 million in deposits; First Coweta, based in Newnan, Ga., with $167 million in assets and $155 million in deposits; and CapitalSouth Bank, based in Birmingham, Ala., with $617 million in assets and $546 million in deposits.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. was appointed receiver of the failed banks, and approved the sale of some or all of their assets and deposits to other institutions.
In contrast to the big bank failures early in the financial crisis, many of the recently shuttered banks were undone not by exotic mortgage products but by garden-variety loans.
At the same time, a knot of big, complex banks collapsing in recent months is sapping billions fro
