Vaccinate kids to control H1N1 flu
06-18-2009
•
Reuters
Targeting children for
vaccination may be the best way of using limited supplies of
vaccine to control the current H1N1 flu pandemic, British
researchers said.
Drugmakers are racing to make a vaccine against the new flu
strain but if the disease increases significantly in the
northern hemisphere autumn, as many experts fear, there are
unlikely to be enough shots to vaccinate entire populations.

US debt rating maintained at highest level by S&P
06-18-2009
•
AP
Credit ratings agency Standard & Poor's said it is
unlikely to lower its rating on the U.S. government in the near-term
despite noting a "significant" weakening in public finances.
S&P said in a report it will retain its top triple A rating for the
U.S.'s long term debt and added that the outlook is stable. Last month,
rival credit ratings agency Moody's Investors Service said the U.S.
government's "AAA" rating is stable despite the country's swelling debt.

Bush criticizes Obama
06-18-2009
•
Washington Post
After months of silence, former president George W. Bush launched a broad-scale critique of President Obama's approach to economic policy, national security and health care during a speech. On the economy, Bush reiterated his belief -- espoused [just not practiced] repeatedly
during his 8 years as president -- that the private sector, not the
government was the key to growth.

Help Celebrate Harry Browne's Birthday
06-18-2009
•
http://www.downsizedc.org/blog/help+celebrate+harr
Today, June 17th, is a
bittersweet day for me. My late husband, Harry Browne, was born on this
day. To commemorate his birth each year of our marriage, I spent a
great deal of time and effort planning a day full of special surprises.
Consequently, it was always a happy day.
Harry has been gone for more than three years now. I miss him more than words can express.
I know many reading this Downsizer-Dispatch miss him too.
In these troubling times, we all miss Harry's voice.
* Harry understood Austrian economic theory and the business cycle.
* He also specialized in understanding the damage
that Big Government does to our economy -- especially when the
politicians try to "fix" it.
We wish we could directly access his wisdom right
now, whether it was in his clear, persuasive columns, or his warm,
convincing monologues on air.
I am pleased that there are voices that continue to carry forth Harry's

The Blackjack Addendum
06-18-2009
•
Truth Nuke
Operation Blackjack has risen to the public eye once again. Thanks
to a fellow patriot, and the Info Warrior Jason Bermas, we now
understand that a hexadecimal code displayed on one of the Union of
North America ID cards, actually spells the words “This is not simply
entertainment.”
Upon receiving this revelation and actively following the Blackjack
story, I felt obligated to decode the string myself. Returning to the
site of origin, I found the slide on frame 15 of part 4 of the series.
Sure enough, once I copied the code and translated it, I found the
gentleman on the Info Warrior to be correct. The code:
(74686973206973206e6f742073696d706c7920656e7465727461696e6d656e74) does
indeed translate into “this is not simply entertainment.”
Combing over the images, I happened upon what appeared to be a new
slide. In part 4 frame 17 a seemingly new image emerged. This simple
addition displayed the header, “Citizens of the Union of North America
Permit

Obama Dreams of New Regulation
06-18-2009
•
arclein
President Obama this afternoon will announce a series of proposals that would involve the government much more deeply in the private markets, from helping to steer consumers into affordable mortgage loans to imposing new limits on the largest financial companies, in a sweeping effort to prevent the kinds of risk-taking that sparked the economic crisis.
The plan is an attempt to overhaul an outdated system of financial regulations, the president plans to say in a speech later today.

Supporters of opposition leader Mir Hossein Moussavi planned to turn Tehran into a sea of black Thursday when thousands of them march, dressed in dark clothes, to mourn comrades killed or wounded while calling for a new presidential election.

Ten Steps To Close Down an Open Society
06-17-2009
•
Naomi Wolf - Huffington Post
It is my argument that, beneath our very noses, George Bush (and now Obama) and his administration are using time-tested tactics to close down an open society. It is time for us to be willing to think the unthinkable - as the author and political journalist Joe Conason, has put it, that it can happen here. And that we are further along than we realise.
Conason eloquently warned of the danger of American authoritarianism. I am arguing that we need also to look at the lessons of European and other kinds of fascism to understand the potential seriousness of the events we see unfolding in the US.
