China Restricts 'Virtual' Economies
07-01-2009
•
John D. Sutter for LewRockwell.com
"These
virtual currencies, as they grow, are going to become competitors
to real-world currencies " and apparently that's what happening
in China. These QQ coins are becoming things you can use at the
corner store to top off your bill."
It's difficult
to say how large virtual economies have become, because governments
don't conduct surveys, Castronova said, but the popularity of online
cash is reportedly growing by as much as 20 percent per year.

I am now getting to the matter that truly baffles me. What most baffles me is the recent government raid in little LaGrange, Ohio. I have several questions: Why did it take place? How could it happen right here in America? Where in America do they find young men willing to execute such orders? What is happening now? Who is coming to the aid of these persecuted people? What has happened to my country over the past few decades?

Obama’s EPA: politics and lies outshine science in new age of “transparency”
06-30-2009
•
Daniel Heller
President Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in its impartial, objective and unbiased pursuit of inconvenient truths, censored and suppressed one of its own researchers, who co-authored a 98-page report detailing why the dangers and causes of global warming are (at best) inconclusive, because, “The administrator and the administration have decided to move forward on endangerment, and your comments do not help the legal or policy case for this decision.” (Does policy determine science or does science determine policy at the EPA? One wonders…)

The Extraordinary Evil of Bernie Madoff (and our next Fed Chairman is...)
07-01-2009
•
Bill Bonner for LewRockwell.com
Poor Bernie.
The man has been ordered to spend 150 years in the hoosegow. What
for? Who did he kill? A century and a half seems a little excessive
for a financial crime. You could hold up three liquor stores and
rape a whole convent and still not get 150 years. With a little
bit of good lawyer-ing, a history of child abuse in the family,
and good behavior in the big house, you’d be back on the street
in 18 months.
But all the
papers seem delighted. “Locked up for Life!” says one
of today’s headlines. The judge “threw the book at him,”
says another. His victims wanted him to get no mercy. The judge
gave him none, imposing the maximum sentence. He is “extraordinarily
evil,” said the man on the bench.
Justice has
been done. Right?

'Fight Them Over There vs. Over Here' a False Choice
07-01-2009
•
Ron Paul for LewRockwell.com
There is no
area in which Republicans have further strayed from our traditions
than in foreign affairs.
Generations
of conservatives followed the great advice of our Founding Fathers
and pursued a restrained foreign policy that rebuffed entangling
alliances and advised America, in the words of John Quincy Adams,
not to "go abroad looking for dragons to slay."
Sen. Robert
Taft, the stalwart of the Old Right, urged America to stay out of
NATO. Dwight Eisenhower was elected on a platform promising to get
us out of the conflict in Korea. Richard Nixon promised to end the
war in Vietnam.

Auditing the Fed Will Audit the State
07-01-2009
•
George F. Smith for LewRockwell.com
But the really
appetizing part of auditing the Fed is knowing what stands behind
it. The Fed is a racket at heart, a con game writ large " what
else can you call an organization with the exclusive privilege of
printing money in the trillions and handing it over to friends?
But if this is true, what does that say about the state, the organization
that created and sanctions it? Is the Fed an honest mistake in the
state's otherwise undying efforts to preserve our liberty, or might
it be a key component of a bigger racket?

California accuses 22 Midas shops in 'massive' bait and switch scheme
07-01-2009
•
www.walletpop.com
California filed a $222 million lawsuit against the owner of 22 Midas
Muffler shops after uncover agents discovered a "massive" scheme in
which consumers were charged for unneeded repairs, California Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced.
"These
Midas shops were running a massive bait-and-switch scam, in which
customers were lured in with the promise of cheap brake specials and
then charged hundreds more for unnecessary repairs," Brown said in a
statement. "This investigation revealed a shady and deceptive operation
that violated the trust of its customers."
During the four-year
investigation, agents found shops owned by Maurice Irving Glad
regularly advertised sub-$100 brake specials to lure customers into
paying for hundreds of dollars of work that was not needed or,
sometimes, not even done.
The lawsuit, filed was filed by
Brown along with Alameda County District Attorney Tom Orloff and Fresno
County Dis

Wildfires Studied
07-01-2009
•
arclein
The study confirmed what scientists have long observed: that low precipitation and high temperatures dry out fuels and result in significant fire years, a pattern that dominates the northern and mountainous portions of the West. But it also provided new insight on the relationship between climate and fire, such as Western shrublands’ and grasslands’ requirement for high precipitation one year followed by dry conditions the next to produce fuels sufficient to result in large wildfires.

With the caloric needs of the planet expected to soar by 50 percent in the next 40 years, planning and investment in global agriculture will become critically important, according a new report released today (June 25).
The report, produced by Deutsche Bank, one of the world's leading global investment banks, in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, provides a framework for investing in sustainable agriculture against a backdrop of massive population growth and escalating demands for food, fiber and fuel.
