Universal Currency

Russia and China have put forth "proposals" which have been highlighted as possible alternatives to the dollar. China has proposed the formation of a new global currency based on a reform of SDR system:
"It is a feasible plan to reform the present SDR and make it into a real settlement currency, a universally accepted 'currency basket' that would replace the dollar at the heart of the monetary system," (Li Ruogu, chairman of the Export-Import Bank of China, Reuters, 6 July 2009)

Back from the Moon, Apollo 11 Astronauts Had to Go Through Customs
07-24-2009
•
Space
Before the
ticker tape parades and the inevitable world tour, the triumphant Apollo 11
astronauts were greeted with a more mundane aspect of life on Earth when they
splashed down 40 years ago today - going through customs.
Just what
did Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins have
to declare? Moon rocks, moon dust and other lunar samples, according to the
customs form filed at the Honolulu Airport in Hawaii on July 24, 1969 - the day
the Apollo 11 crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean to end their historic moon
landing mission.

Blown deadline, blown chance?
07-24-2009
•
Politico
With his August deadline now dead,
President Barack Obama must hope the prospects for health reform this
year haven’t expired as well " but the backsliding and bitter words on Capitol Hill this week show just how much his sweeping plan is at risk.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s decision
Thursday not to seek a Senate vote on health reform before the recess
means the House most likely won’t act either " putting the votes off
until September.

Angel's face uncovered at Istanbul's Haghia Sophia
07-24-2009
•
AP
Restoration workers have uncovered a well-preserved, long-hidden
mosaic face of an angel at the former Byzantine cathedral of Haghia
Sophia in Istanbul, an official said.
The
seraphim figure " one of two located on the side of a dome " had been
covered up along with the building's other Christian mosaics shortly
after Constantinople " the former name for Istanbul " fell to the
Ottomans in 1453 and the cathedral was turned into a mosque.

Arizona HCR2014: National Health Care Nullification
6/26/09
•
Tenth Amendment Cntr
Right on the heels of a successful state-by-state nullification of the 2005 Real ID act, the State of Arizona is out in the forefront of a growing resistance to proposed federal health care legislation.
This past Monday, the Arizona State Senate voted 18-11 to concur with the House and approve the Health Care Freedom Act (HCR2014). This will put a proposal on the 2010 ballot which would constitutionally override any law, rule or regulation that requires individuals or employers to participate in any particular health care system.
HCR2014, if approved by voters next year, also would prohibit any fine or penalty on anyone or any company for deciding to purchase health care directly. Doctors and health care providers would remain free to accept those funds and provide those services.
Finally, it would overrule anything that prohibits the sale of private health insurance in Arizona.
Five other states " Indiana, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota and Wyoming " are considering similar

ENSO Linked to Climate Change
07-24-2009
•
arclein
Bob Carter, one of four scientists who has recently questioned the justification for the proposed Australian emissions trading scheme, says that this paper has significant consequences for public climate policy.
"The close relationship between ENSO and global temperature, as described in the paper, leaves little room for any warming driven by human carbon dioxide emissions. The available data indicate that future global temperatures will continue to change primarily in response to ENSO cycling, volcanic activity and solar changes.”
