The Costs of Carbon Legislation
06-02-2009
•
Mises Institute
Nobel laureate Paul Krugman has challenged critics of the government's intentions to regulate carbon dioxide emissions, and he has even specifically endorsed the pending Waxman-Markey bill which includes a "cap-and-trade" program. According to Krugman, the costs of such legislation are no big deal, and in exchange we avert catastrophe. So why all the criticism?

Congress's Afterthought, Wall Street's Trillion Dollars

•
Washington Post
On the day before Thanksgiving in 1991, the US Senate voted to vastly expand the emergency powers of the Federal Reserve. [kinda like creating it] Almost no one noticed. The critical language was contained in a single, inscrutable sentence, and the only public explanation was offered during a final debate that began with a reminder that senators had airplanes to catch. Yet, in removing a long-standing prohibition on loans that supported financial speculation, the provision effectively allowed the Fed for the first time to lend money to Wall Street during a crisis.

"I think, you know, freedom means freedom for everyone," Cheney said in a speech at the National Press Club. He supports gays being able to marry, but believes states, not the federal government, should make the decision.

Wings Aloft
06-02-2009
•
arclein
A new study says that within three years jumbo jet"makers could be testing a new type of wing that reduces midair drag and cuts fuel costs by an estimated 20 percent. The wing would do this using small, built in jets that redirect air around the wing during flight.
"This has come as a bit of a surprise to all of us in the aerodynamics community," Duncan Lockerby, an associate professor of fluid-solid mechanics at the University of Warwick in the U.K. and head of the research project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and aircraft maker Airbus, said in a statement. "It was discovered, essentially, by waggling a piece of wing from side to side in a wind tunnel."

I find it incredible in America that a regulatory agency thinks it has jurisdiction to probe an independent business. Oh, but I forget about Chrysler, GM, and our banking system. Foolish me. What the Federal Communications Commission is doing is outlandish and smacks of tyranny in the making....
