Obama protests, rallies heat up in Phoenix
08-17-2009
•
East Valley Tribune
The blare of megaphones rose with the sun in downtown Phoenix Monday
as more than 1,000 protestors from all over the political spectrum
called for President Barack Obama to take action on myriad issues.
The largest crowds swelled at Washington and Third streets, just
outside the Phoenix Convention Center, where the president began
delivering his speech shortly after 10 a.m. at the national Veterans of
Foreign Wars convention.

130 million credit card numbers stolen in identity theft scheme
08-17-2009
•
Reuters
U.S. authorities announced what they believed to be the largest
hacking and identity theft case ever prosecuted on Monday in a scheme
in which more than 130 million credit and debit card numbers were
stolen.
Three men were indicted on charges of being responsible for five
corporate data breaches in a scheme in which the card numbers were
stolen from Heartland Payment Systems, 7-Eleven Inc and Hannaford
Brothers Co, federal prosecutors said in a statement.

California resort offers $19 'survivor' package
08-17-2009
•
Reuters
For their one-and-only family getaway this year, the Billingtons
checked in to an upscale San Diego resort on Sunday with many of the
usual vacation accessories -- bathing suits, board games and golf clubs.
But they also brought flashlights, sleeping bags and an inflatable
mattress because the pool-side room they booked for just $19 comes with
a tent where the beds normally would be. They even had to pack their
own toilet paper.

Reader's Digest plans to file for bankruptcy to trim its debt
08-17-2009
•
AP
Reader's Digest Association, publisher of the widely read Reader's Digest magazine, said Monday it will probably file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy so its U.S. business can cut its debt load.
The bankruptcy would take the form of a
so-called pre-arranged filing, Reader's Digest said in a statement. A
pre-arranged filing comes after a company has already reached deals
with its lenders to cut its debt.

The Orwellian Healthcare Plan to Usher in New Police State in America
8/17/09
•
PR Inside
The current Health Bill (House bill H.R. 3200) has mental health parity as part of its Health Plan. This parity is set to provide equal opportunity for non-science psychiatry to be equivalent to a medical doctor’s scientific opinion on health.
San Francisco, CA, August 17, 2009 -- Psychiatric patients are traditionally considered “cured” when their insurance benefits run out. In the upcoming bill “Healthy Americans Act, the compensation to psychiatry will not run out. All the psychiatrist has to do is forward their unscientific opinion on whether a patient is cured or not. The legislation is essentially a multi billion
dollar taxpayer fund to psychiatrists. Psychiatry’s only remedy is mass psychotropic drugging. It used to be electric shock treatment, lobotomies, and straitjackets, but they found big allies with Pharmaceutical companies, the FDA and now Congress......

Obama visits Phoenix: Who cares?
08-17-09
•
Daniel Heller
Obama tainted our beautiful state once again today with his presence and another one of his endless campaign speeches. (Yes, “campaign.” Considering his lack of real governmental experience, the man really doesn’t know how to stop.) This time it he was trying to appeal to veterans by doing what all good socialists and hack salesmen do: promise everything plus the moon...for free! He spoke late this morning in downtown Phoenix at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Convention at the Convention Center. Nothing new here (aside from his being in Phoenix). Big deal. Hope and change. Yada yada.

Continued Lying Requires TALF Extension
08/17/2009
•
The Market Ticker
In the news today The Federal Reserve announced that due to the continued lying by banks about asset valuations, a practice that has resulted in ABS and CMBS markets remaining locked up, they are continuing to sponsor and support accounting and control fraud, acts that should be treated as felonies and result in prison sentences:
Nonetheless, the markets for asset-backed securities (ABS) backed by consumer and business loans and for commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS) are still impaired and seem likely to remain so for some time. To promote the flow of credit to businesses and households and to facilitate the financing of commercial properties, the Federal Reserve and Treasury approved extending TALF loans against newly issued ABS and legacy CMBS through March 31, 2010.
The markets remain impaired due to the continued lying and will remain so until the lying and control fraud stops.
That Congress and The Obama Administration continue permit this lying is an outrage w

Taleb: Bernanake, Summers and Geithner Are Idiots, "Economists Have Been No Better in Their Pre
08/16/2009
•
Washington;s Blog
Nassim Nicholas Taleb wrote an open letter today to British Conservative leader David Cameron saying:
I despair of the Obama administration's ability to fix this financial crisis and prevent future ones. I am appalled by the dangers it has been creating and its takeover by the same economic establishment responsible for this crisis...
Be careful, too, of the so-called science of economics. Economists have been no better in their predictions than cab drivers. We have an "expert" problem, in which the expert provides you with misplaced confidence, but no information. Because we think, correctly, that the dermatologist, the baker, the chemist are true experts (they know more about their respective subjects than the rest of us), we swallow the canard that the economists at the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the Bank of England and the US Federal Reserve are also experts, without checking their record. This reliance on faux experts is, for the most part, what g

One Bill of Rights for You, Two Bills of Rights for Them
08-16-2009
•
Injustice Everywhere
The introductory text of the bill asserts that it is designed to
improve police accountability, however the actual language of the bill
contains no provisions that would force police departments to
investigate complaints or dictate any type of process that would
improve accountability at all. In essence, it only gives police
officers more rights and communities fewer rights in how they can
police their own police.

Grand Junction CO Aug. 15, 2009:
Scenes from Obamacare opposition gatherings

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
From a Grand Junction resident:
Obama In Grand Junction CO
Well I'm sure you have heard the Western Slope is being subjected to
a visit from White house royalty. If ever there was a mockery of Tax
payers' money it is this one.
I turned on Fox News around 4:30 to catch some of it. I could only
manage to watch one thundering round of standing ovation. Talk about
a staged showing.
They are using our largest High School for the so called Town Hall meeting.
As of last night NO ONE was allowed in the Bookcliff mountain range.
That is the mountain range that borders our Airport. As of a certain
time they will totally closing down the business loop of I-70 and it
will remain closed until they have him out of here. State Police are
everywhere.
The Conservative Alliance held a huge rally in one of our parks this
morning at 10 a.m. We went to it.
I am guessing there was close to 3-4 thousand there. They had many
speakers. One was Josh Penry, who will be running for

Top doctor says system 'imploding' (Canada)
08/16/2009
•
Health Zone
he incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association says Canada's health-care system is sick and doctors need to develop a plan to cure it.
Dr. Anne Doig says patients are getting less than optimal care, and she adds that physicians from across the country " who will gather in Saskatoon today for their annual meeting " recognize that changes must be made.
"We all agree that the system is imploding, we all agree that things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize," Doig told The Canadian Press.
"We know that there must be change," she said. "We're all running flat out, we're all just trying to stay ahead of the immediate day-to-day demands."

Blasting Neutrinos Under Wisconsin May Yield Big Payoff
08-16-2009
•
Washington Post
Make that under Wisconsin. Because the Earth is round,
anyone wishing to send an object in a straight line from one spot on
the planet to another spot 500 miles away must aim through the planet
itself.
Here's where the really weird physics kick in: Neutrinos blast right
through the Earth with nary a spark. They interact so rarely and so
weakly with normal matter that they can zip right through solid rock as
though it were not even there -- much like light through a clear glass
window. That's why, contrary to the hopes of some private contractors
who heard about a big new experiment under construction, Fermilab does
not need to dig a tunnel underneath Wisconsin.

Mullen traveled to Kabul in April to confront McKiernan. The chairman
hoped the commander would opt to save face and retire, but he refused.
You're going to have to fire me, he told Mullen.
Two weeks later, Gates did. It was the first sacking of a wartime
theater commander since President Harry S. Truman dismissed Gen.
Douglas MacArthur in 1951 for opposing his Korean War policy.
