Amsterdam: O'Reilly Factor vs. reality
07-29-2009
•
Boing Boing
O'Reilly
recently invited a couple of pert blond Republican strategists to
frighten Fox viewers about Amsterdam's lax pot laws, which have made
the city a "mess," and "cesspool of corruption." The video above was made by a citizen of Amsterdam who used
real statistics about drug use in his city compared with drug use in
the US.

07-29-2009

need a culture of collective responsibility, a culture where every
individual understands his or her role,” Janet Napolitano, secretary of

Who Will Tell Michael J. Fox He Needs to Die?
07/29/2009
•
American Spectator
"If they would rather die they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population."
-- Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol
Should Michael J. Fox be put to death?
Celebrities and death. Now there's a potent cocktail.
Several parts fame, a few jiggers of Hollywood and a splash each for sports, business and journalism. Did I mention politics and government bureaucracy? Sorry. Without that essential element the mixture has no wallop. And a wallop this concoction surely will have, particularly if you believe actor Michael J. Fox has overstayed his welcome on the planet.
Let's pour the dry ingredients of politics and government bureaucracy into the pitcher first, beginning with the politics of death and dying.

Mythbusters Tackle 911
07-29-2009
•
Douglas Herman
Armed with a brand new batch of clever inventions and one
eye-popping scale model, the intrepid team of Mythbusters decided to test
a 911conspiracy theory, that the WTC towers collapsed by controlled demolition.
"We wanted to prove the conspiracy wackos wrong,"
said the intrepid duo, Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage. "And of course
score some big bucks by blowing things up."
According to the New York Times, Mythbusters "may
be the best science program on television." Throughout scores of entertaining
episodes, the dynamic duo of Savage and Hyneman patiently construct scale
models and then smash them, crush them, burn them or blow them up.
"Or blow them down," said Savage, cracking a
grin. "All in the name of science."
According to millions of 911 conspiracy theorists, who
believe the World Trade Towers collapsed by carefully rigged explosives,

OBAMA'S "HEALTH-CARE" DEATH LISTS COMING YOUR WAY

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive . . . . . those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." " ;C. S. Lewis

Obamacare Does Cut Your Medicare Benefits
7/29/09
•
The Heritage Foundation
Yesterday at his AARP townhall, Presdient Barack Obama claimed: “Nobody is talking about cutting Medicare benefits.” The July 28th Barack Obama needs to talk to the January 11th Barack Obama who told ABC News:
We’ve got to eliminate programs that don’t work, and I’ll give you an example in the health care area. We are spending a lot of money subsidizing the insurance companies around something called Medicare Advantage, a program that gives them subsidies to accept Medicare recipients but doesn’t necessarily make people on Medicare healthier. And if we eliminate that and other programs, we can potentially save $200 billion out of the health care system. More

Short-term Treasuries fall after 5-year auction
07/29/2009
•
Yahoo
Short-term Treasury prices fell Wednesday, sending their yields higher, after a disappointing auction of $39 billion in five-year notes.
The auction's bid-to-cover ratio, a measure of demand, dropped to 1.92 percent from 2.58 percent at an auction of five-year notes in June. Indirect bids, an indication of foreign buying, tumbled to 37 percent of the total bids accepted, compared with 63 percent in June.
"It's hard to describe it as anything but ugly," said Michael Pond, an interest rate strategist at Barclays Capital. "The market is beginning to choke on the increases in supply."

Right Wing Attacks Collide: 'Racist' Obama Using Health Reform for Reparations
07/29/2009
•
The Huffington Post
In the swirling mass of news coverage and opinion-making on the issues of the day (Gates arrest, health care reform, birthers, etc.) we're seeing the convergence of various anti-Obama attack lines. In addition to the racial undertones of the birther movement, one theme gaining traction on the right in light of the Gates arrest is that Obama is racist:

Biological Immortality
07-29-2009
•
arclein
It is possible though that we evolved into organisms that have out stripped our ability to produce stem cells. In short we simply have metabolisms that operate far to fast to be able to replace all the damage as needed unlike the above mentioned reptiles. Thus creating a mechanism that takes up the slack may be a way to bring the human aging cycle under control and restore the possibility of biological immortality to humanity.

Solar AC Output
07-29-2009
•
arclein
Startup GreenRay Solar is getting funding to develop this kind of technology, so that one day a homeowner can buy a solar panel and pretty much install it him/herself. Right now, you usually have to be a licensed electrician to do the electrical work needed to install conventional panels. But GreenRay’s panels would be a lot simpler, because they bypass the inverter step. It still might not be as easy as plugging in an appliance, but it would bring PV installation down a couple notches, within the reach of aspiring DIY-ers

A Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory researcher has developed a screening method that would use ionic liquids - a special type of molten salt that becomes liquid under the boiling point of water (100 degrees Celsius) - to separate carbon dioxide from its source, making it a cleaner, more viable and stable method than what is currently available.

Bashing Goldman Sachs Is Simply a Game for Fools: Michael Lewis
07/29/2009
•
Bloomberg
From the moment I left Yale and started working for Goldman Sachs, I’ve felt uneasy interacting with those who don’t.
Today, the sheer volume of irresponsible media commentary has forced us to reconsider our public-relations strategy. With every uptick in our share price it’s grown clearer that we who are inside Goldman Sachs must open a dialogue with you who are not. Not for our benefit, but for yours.
America stands at a crossroads, and Goldman Sachs now owns both of them. In choosing which road to take, ordinary Americans must not be distracted by unproductive resentment toward the toll-takers. To that end we at Goldman Sachs would like to dispel several false and insidious rumors.
