ARE YOU KIDDING? Toxic Waste Becomes Triple-A Again…
08-27-2009  •  Nathan's Economic Edge
Are you tempted? The Temptations " Get Ready: Remember me? Wall Street repackages toxic debt. Wall Street may have discovered a way out from under the bad debt and risky mortgages that have clogged the financial markets. The would-be solution probably sounds familiar: It's a lot like what got banks in trouble in the first place. In recent months investment banks have been repackaging old mortgage securities and offering to sell them as new products, a plan that's nearly identical to the complicated investment packages at the heart of the market's collapse. "There is a little bit of deja vu in this," said Arizona State University economics professor Herbert Kaufman.  Read Full Story

Obama Administration Sued Over Healthcare Enemies List
08-27-2009  •  U.S. News
A doctors' group and an organization that advocates for the interest of the inner-city poor have joined forced to sue the Obama administration, charging that its abortive effort to collect criticisms made by those opposed to President Obama's plan to change the U.S. health care system infringed on their First Amendment rights. In a complaint filed Thursday in U.S. District Court, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons and the Coalition for Urban Renewal and Education said the White House had attempted to "unlawfully" collect information on protected political speech when it asked Obamacare supporters to report any negative comments about the proposal to a U.S. government email address, flag@whitehouse.gov.  Read Full Story

Army "judge": 9/11 lawyers can't see CIA 'black sites'
08-27-2009  •  AP
A military judge says defense lawyers for an alleged Sept. 11 plotter held at Guantánamo don't need to inspect secret CIA overseas prisons to determine whether the accused al Qaeda terrorist is competent to stand trial.

Judge Stephen Henley, an Army colonel, ruled Monday that the so-called black sites have likely changed enough since 2006 that an inspection would be of no use to Ramzi Bin al Shibh's Pentagon-appointed defense lawyers.

U.S. deaths in Afghanistan headed for another record
08-27-2009  •  McClatchy News
With the deaths of four U.S. soldiers Tuesday, the U.S.-led NATO coalition in Afghanistan now has lost more troops this year than in all of 2008, and August is on track to be the deadliest month for American troops there since U.S. operations began nearly eight years ago.

The numbers reflect the rising pace of combat in Afghanistan and come at a difficult time, just as Army Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the U.S. commander in Afghanistan, is considering asking for more U.S. troops even as opinion polls show that a majority of Americans think the war in Afghanistan isn't worth the cost.

FDIC Insurance Fund Shrinks to $10.4 Billion (TO INSURE $6.2 trillion)
08-27-2009  •  WSJ
The FDIC's insurance fund, which guards $6.2 trillion in U.S. deposits, fell to $10.4 billion at the quarter's end, the lowest since mid-1993.. Data released Thursday painted a gloomy picture of the state of banking. The government fund that protects consumer deposits fell to its lowest level since 1993. The continuing woes, which come despite trillions of dollars in government rescue financing and a rebounding stock market, raised questions about how quickly the economy can revive. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said it had 416 banks on its "problem list" at the end of June, equivalent to about 5% of the nation's banks, up from 305 at the end of March and 117 at the end of June 2008. Problem banks had a combined $299.8 billion of assets at the end of June, compared with $78.3 billion a year ago. Landing on the FDIC's problem list means a bank is at a high risk of insolvency. State and federal regulators have already shut 81 banks this year.  Read Full Story

The Evil Ezekiel Emanuel
08-27-2009  •  Economic Policy Journal
There is no other way to put this. Ezekiel Emanuel is probably the most dangerous man on earth. He wants to decide whether you live or die, "for the good of society." He thinks there are too many new drugs coming on the market. He has the ear of the President and his brother sits next to the President as chief of staff. If you lump all the mad scientists that have been put on the big screen by Hollywood, you are still not going to come up with the mad, totally insane ideas of Ezekiel Emanuel. To support my contentions, I bring to your attention an Op-Ed written in today's WSJ by Betsy McCaughey. She is chairman of the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths and a former lieutenant governor of New York state. Is Ezekiel against doctors doing their damnedest to help the patient in front of him? You bet he is. Here's McCaughey: Dr. Emanuel is part of a school of thought that redefines a physician’s duty, insisting that it includes working for the greater good of s  Read Full Story

As China’s Best Friend, Kissinger Still Wants World Government
08-27-2009  •  JBS
In a recent message sent across the land, Henry Kissinger pointed out what any competent observer of the financial world knows only too well: America’s indebtedness has spawned many problems. For one, he suggested that the nearly $1 trillion of U.S. debt held by China indicates that “Chinese influence in global economic decision-making needs to be enlarged.” Not as worried about the enormous debt itself, he worries about its effect on China and on Chinese-U.S. relations. This is the man who, more than anyone, had a huge hand in forging the relationship China now has with the U.S. He now wants the two countries to work toward “political cooperation in shaping a new world order.” His choice of that phrase is significant because he has frequently called for creation of a “new world order,” the code phrase meaning world government and socialism. To achieve his long-sought goal, he wants the United States to forget that communism that still dominates China. Our nation should “resist the   Read Full Story

Is It Time To Cross Partisan Lines and Unite To Fight A Common Enemy?
08-27-2009  •  Op Ed News
Today, on my site I received a comment that jolted my awareness and gave me great pause for thought and contemplation; I believe I have always had the gift of knowing when an individual is sincere - and Obama was by far from my first choice, and most of you know that I favored Kucinich and after him, Ron Paul, who had never in his life voted against our constitution. One phrase entered my mind, “Together we Stand, Divided we fall,” and that is what is occurring in our nation. We are being divided and fighting amongst one another, and while we're busy shouting accusations at the so-called opposition, our economy is being plundered and our nation is being conquered by the combined forces of Democrats and Republicans who are working together for corporate America - not “We the People.” This is the comment I received, and I ask all of you to give it some thought. “Endgame” and the FEMA Internment Camps are real - we all know that. Bernanke Gets to Experience Phony Money Creation, Up Close
08-27-2009  •  Economic Policy Journal
While Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has a day job printing money by writing checks out of thin air that he shovels to Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase, which then dilutes the value of the money in everyonelse's pocket, Bernanke reportedly doesn't like anyone diluting his personal checking account funds. His wife, Anna, had her pocketbook stolen in a Starbucks by a tool, Lee Reid, of a "master criminal". Sounds just like Bernanke so far, doesn't it, "master criminal" and all? Since he alerted his bank, Bernanke didn't lose any money. So how is he handling the situation? "It's fair to say he was not pleased," Newsweek quotes one close associate of Bernanke. Hey, just like the people who are not pleased with Bernanke's act and want to end the Fed.   Read Full Story

Comment mine - it sure does they privatized the profits and then socialized the losses! In the build-up to the global crisis of 2008, tiny Iceland was a canary in the mine, a leading indicator of wider vulnerabilities. Now, amid growing optimism about global recovery, Iceland may again be a leading indicator of trouble ahead. In the space of a few days last October Iceland’s whole banking system collapsed and was taken into public ownership, including the three banks which went from nowhere in 2002 to rank among the world’s 300 biggest by 2007. These three now make it into a less glorious league " Moody’s list of the 11 biggest financial bankruptcies in history. Repeal Obama's Raw Deal. Now.
08-27-2009  •  American Thinker
Back in 2003, when a Barack Obama presidency was little more than a gleam in George Soros's eye, Jim Powell published a book which was disturbingly prescient. Titled FDR's Folly: How Roosevelt and His New Deal Prolonged the Great Depression, it outlined how Franklin Roosevelt's big spending policies hindered, rather than helped, the United States in recovering from the Great Depression. Obama apparently was too busy in 2003 -- maybe listening to his spiritual advisor Jermemiah Wright ranting "God damn America," or helping his good friend and mentor Tony Rezko raise money for Obama's U.S. Senate campaign, or voting 'present' in the Illinois state senate -- to read Powell's book, because he has embarked on a path to replicate FDR's failures. Obama's reckless spending has already sent the federal deficit mushrooming, like some economic radioactive cloud, in just his first year, and evidence mounts that Obama's economic policies are   Read Full Story

A new world political and social order, an environmentally sustainable planet, world peace and a new internet system to replace the one that’s creaking under the weight of mass multi-media; these are the core aims of the University of Essex’s new research strategy. Socialism’s Last Stand The global warming movement is not about global warming. It is about the creation of an international political control arrangement by which bureaucrats who favor socialism can gain control over the international economy. This strategy was stated boldly by economist Robert Heilbroner in 1990. Heilbroner, the multi-millionaire socialist and author of the best-selling history of economic thought, The Worldly Philosophers, wrote the manifesto for these bureaucrats. He did this in an article, “Reflections: After Communism,” published by The New Yorker(Sept. 10, 1990). In this article, he made an astounding admission. He said that Ludw  Read Full Story

How Robot Armies Will Work

"The Terminator" showed us a future where battalions of sentient, humanoid robots wage war on mankind. While that vision is still well within the realm of science fiction, many countries are looking into creating robot soldiers, including the United States. In fact, in 2001, the Floyd D. Spence National Defense Authorization Act set a goal for the U.S. Armed Forces -- create an unmanned combat vehicle force that would account for one third of all vehicles in operation. So far, the robot designs don't resemble the Terminator, but they can be just as lethal. The U.S. Army's Future Combat Systems (FCS) plan is a comprehensive strategy to upgrade the nation's military systems across all branches of the Armed Forces. The plan calls for an integrated battle system -- a fleet of different vehicles that will use up to 80 percent of the same parts, new unattended sensors designed to collect intelligence in the field, and unmanned launch systems that can fire missiles at e  Read Full Story

MGI finds that a comprehensive program of reform would also enrich the global economy with $1.9 trillion a year in net new consumption, boosting China's share of the worldwide total to 13 percent"4 percentage points higher than its share without further effort. China's household income would also be 15% higher than current trends. Higher consumption will make China's growth sustainable. The implied increase in GDP would be 0.8-1.2% over the projected 7.7% from 2010 to 2025.MGI set out a wide range of policies that it said could raise the share of private household consumption to 45-50 percent of gross domestic product by 2025, or 6-11 percentage points more than the rate of 39 percent it is likely to reach on present trends. Consumption made up just 35.3 percent of China's GDP in 2008, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Japan's consumption share is 55 percent and the United States' is 71 percent, MGI noted in a report.  Read Full Story

Obama Can No Longer Pass the Buck on Economy
08-26-2009  •  WSJ
It's Barack Obama's economy now. For the seven months since his inauguration, Mr. Obama and his economic team have pushed the blame for everything bad onto former President George W. Bush and taken credit for everything good. The gaping hole in the federal budget for the next decade? Team Obama blames Mr. Bush's tax cuts, the Medicare prescription-drug benefit he signed and the recession he bequeathed. The encouraging signs that the economy and banks are stabilizing? Team Obama credits its captain's fiscal stimulus and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner's stress tests and the bank capital-raising that ensued. That argument worked for a while. Mr. Obama did inherit a collapsing economy, a near-paralyzed financial system and an unsustainable fiscal policy, plus wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He did quickly push through a $787 billion stimulus. Despite its unpopularity and time-release design -- only a quarter of the money will be out the door by the end of Se  Read Full Story
