Sen. Roland Burris (D-Blago)
06-09-2009
•
Washington Post OpEd
WE DON'T know where to begin with the latest mess that has ensnared
Sen. Roland W. Burris (D-Ill.). No, "ensnared" isn't the right word.
That would imply that he's blameless for his troubles, which isn't the
case. Phone conversations taped by federal prosecutors that were
released May 26 between Mr. Burris and the brother of then-Gov. Rod
Blagojevich belie the senator's repeated assertions that there was no
quid pro quo for his appointment to the seat vacated by President Obama.

U.S. war funding bill brims with PORK
06-08-2009
•
Reuters
A $100 billion bill to fund U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is
rapidly accumulating extra items such as money for military aircraft
the Pentagon doesn't want and possibly a scheme to jump-start sagging
auto sales.
The cars and planes are not directly linked to the U.S. war effort.
But they are typical of Congress' penchant for loading bills with
unrelated spending in hopes the funds will sail through on the strength
of the main legislation.

U.S. top court judge delays Chrysler sale for now
06-08-2009
•
Reuters
The sale of bankrupt automaker Chrysler LLC to a group led by
Italian carmaker Fiat SpA was temporarily blocked by a U.S. Supreme
Court justice, with no indication how long the delay would
last.
In a one-sentence order, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said the
bankruptcy judge's orders allowing the sale "are stayed pending further
order" by her or by the Supreme Court.

FBI Director Defends Use of Informants in Mosques
06-08-2009
•
AP
FBI Director Robert Mueller on Monday
defended the agency's use of informants within U.S. mosques, despite
complaints from Muslim organizations that worshippers and clerics are
being targeted instead of possible terrorists.
Mueller's
comments came just days after a Michigan Muslim organization asked the
Justice Department to investigate complaints that the FBI is asking the
faithful to spy on Islamic leaders and worshippers. Similar alarm
followed the disclosure earlier this year that the FBI planted a spy in
Southern California mosques.

House Dems favor insurance requirement
06-08-2009
•
MyWay AP
WASHINGTON (AP) - Senior House Democrats drafting health care
legislation are considering slapping an unspecified financial penalty
on anyone who refuses to purchase affordable health insurance, a key
committee chairman said Monday.
In addition, officials said Democrats are considering a new tax on
certain health insurance benefits as one of numerous options to help
pay for expanding coverage to the uninsured. No details on the tax were
immediately available, and no final decisions were expected until next
week at the earliest.
These officials said drafters of the legislation will include a
government-run insurance option as well as plans offered by private
companies. The government option draws near-unanimous opposition from
Republicans and provokes concerns among many Democrats, as well,
although President Barack Obama has spoken out in favor of it.

6/08/09
•
Money News
More than 600,000 seniors are delinquent in their mortgage payments or already in foreclosure, USA Today reports.
Unlike younger people, many are on fixed incomes and lack the money or job opportunities to catch up on payments when they fall behind.
"I've got a lot of seniors who have just been nailed," mortgage specialist Dean Wegner told the newspaper.

U.S. Preps for Possible Showdown With North Korea
6/08/09
•
National Terror Alert
The U.S. military is stepping up training and reviewing target sets in case the North Koreans decide to go to war.
As we learned last week, North Korea looks to be prepping for another long-range missile test, and South Korea has reportedly outlined plans to strike back if North Korea targets its warships. The U.S. military is also preparing for the worst; Aviation Week ace reporters Amy Butler and Dave Fulghum have an excellent rundown of stepped-up military preparations in the event North Korea follows through on its belligerent rhetoric.

AP Edits Palestinian Suffering Out of Obama’s Speech
06-08-2009
•
kabobfest.com
An AP transcript of Obama's speech "as provided by CQ Transcriptions" left out the President's comments on the suffering of Palestinians. Given the accolades for that being the greatest Presidential summary of Palestinian vicimization under Israeli rule ever, it is shocking that it was selectively excised from the transcripts.

The nation’s most populous state is on the verge of passing a law to give special driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants who won’t meet the security standards under a federal measure designed to protect the country from terrorists.
By 2011 all states must verify the authenticity of every driver’s license applicant by confirming that documents"such as a birth certificate or passport"submitted to get the card are legitimate and that the applicant is in the United States legally

Private Space to the Government: "Get Out of the Way!"
06-08-2009
•
Popular Mechanics
The mood at the Space Business Forum, an
annual gathering of investors and space geeks
was impatience to get the feds out of the way so the private sector can
attract investments and grow quicker. "I'd say the role of government
[in the space industry] is too high," says Heidi Wood, the senior
equity analyst for aerospace for Morgan Stanley. "There are far too
many hands on it."

•
The Daily Show
Euro Pacific Capital's Peter Schiff and Author, "The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets" will be interviewed on The Daily Show with John Stewart 6/9/09. This will be a great interview without all the "normal" pundits cutting off Peter when he talks about the economy. So plug into the Matrix for this one [ED]
Schiff is best known for his bearish views on the US economy and for his claims to have predicted the economic crisis of 2008. He has risen to media prominence following the publication of his book Crash Proof: How to Profit From the Coming Economic Collapse, published in 2007.
