Democrats say health care bill to pass this year
09-10-2009
•
AP
Democratic congressional leaders predicted passage of health care
legislation within a few months despite undimmed Republican opposition,
claiming momentum from President Barack Obama's speech and
renewed commitment from lawmakers fresh from a month of meetings with
constituents.
Increasingly, events in the Senate Finance Committee appeared
pivotal, precursor to likely votes in both the House and the Senate by
early October. "I'm confident the president will sign a bill this
year," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California.

Employers' hiring plans for the upcoming fourth quarter dropped to their lowest level in the history of Manpower's Employment Outlook Survey, which started in 1962.
A net -3% of employers said they'll hire in the fourth quarter, down from -2% in the third quarter, on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the Milwaukee-based firm's survey of more than 28,000 employers. Before this year, the survey's previous low point was a net 1% hiring outlook for the third quarter of 1982.

Suddenly and without warning, the gigantic river of ice sped up,

So Did Texas Execute an Innocent Man? Do you care?
09-10-2009

The Agitator
There has long been a sentiment among death penalty opponents that
proof of an executed innocent would turn public opinion on the death
penalty. I’m pessimistic that’s going to happen. But it does raise the
question for supporters of capital punishment: Does Willingham’s case
make you rethink your position? If not, how many more cases of an
executed innocent person would it take to make you change your mind?

Question a doctor and lose your child
09-10-2009
•
Timesonline
PARENTS are being threatened with having their children taken into care after questioning doctors’ diagnoses or objecting to their medical care.
John Hemming, a Liberal Democrat MP, who campaigns to stop injustices in the family court, said: “Very often care proceedings are used as retaliation by local authorities against ‘uppity’ people who question the system.”
Cases are emerging across the UK:
The mother of a 13-year-old girl who became partly paralysed after being given a cervical cancer vaccination says social workers have told her the child may be removed if she (the mother) continues to link her condition with the vaccination.

Atlanta Journal Constitution
Kimia McMoore, 34, said she was talking to her daughter on her
Bluetooth cell phone outside her apartment on North Hill Parkway when
Fraser began harassing her.
According to a police report, Fraser
asked McMoore who she was talking to and she pointed to her Bluetooth.
Fraser then followed her to her car and attempted to detain her,
McMoore told police.
McMoore said she pushed Fraser away and the two continued to argue. She called 911.
That's
when Fraser left momentarily and called for back-up, claiming the woman
was being disorderly. He returned with a set of handcuffs and placed a
cuff on the woman's right wrist, the report states.

Prosecutorial Discretion in Action: Andrew Sullivan Skates on Marijuana Charge
09-10-2009
•
CRIME & FEDERALISM
Prosecutors say they need a lot of discretion. Why? So that they can prosecute the powerless, while refusing to prosecute the powerful and connected? You think I'm some sort of wild-eyed Marxist?
Hardly. Here's a typical case Political commentator, author and writer for The Atlantic magazine Andrew M. Sullivan won’t have to face charges stemming from a recent pot bust at the Cape Cod National SeashoreIn my opinion, no one should be prosecuted for possessing marijuana on federal property. However, if we're going to have these stupid laws on the books, shouldn't they be applied even to influential and well-known people like Andrew Sullivan? Assistant United States Attorney James F. Lang disagreed. Prosecutorial discretion at its finest.
The next time AUSA Lang is prosecuting some-small time druggie, be sure to ask him what it takes to get the "Sullivan treatment."

Big Food vs. Big Insurance
09-10-2009
•
NYT
No one disputes that the $2.3 trillion we devote to the health care industry is often spent unwisely, but the fact that the United States spends twice as much per person as most European countries on health care can be substantially explained, as a study released last month says, by our being fatter. Even the most efficient health care system that the administration could hope to devise would still confront a rising tide of chronic disease linked to diet.
That’s why our success in bringing health care costs under control ultimately depends on whether Washington can summon the political will to take on and reform a second, even more powerful industry: the food industry.

Foreclosed: Blame Bill Clinton’s Repeal of Glass-Steagall
09-10-2009
•
The Strange Death of Liberal America
This is an older story I am submitting it so the Liberal Fascists who may appear on site from the brad blog can see the truth! Many Democrats wish Bill Clinton still occupied the White House. However, before you put him in Mt. Rushmore, you might want to investigate his role in the mortgage foreclosure crisis.
The chief aim of what I have termed the Republican Counterrevolution has always been to roll back the New Deal. Anti-gov’ment rhetoric hides this as surely as states’ rights hid racist segregation. Of all the New Deal legislation the GOP has sought to overturn, one that has always been at or near the top of the list is the Glass-Steagall Act. Ironically, a Democratic president repealed this for them.

An unreconstructed Southerner from Virginia, Carter Glass shepherded the creation of the Federal Reserve System through Congress,

Feds in a Box - Unwinding May Not Be So easy
09-10-2009
•
Chris Martenson
Now that the Fed has declared that the recession has ended and green shoots are everywhere, the next obvious part of this journey will have to be the unwinding of the massive amounts of stimulus and thin-air money that has been injected into the system.
Certainly after watching the risk-money out-chasing junker stocks well up off their lows, we can surmise that the speculative animal juices are flowing again and that the Fed might want to consider taking away the punchbowl.
Instead, today the Fed bought another $18.8 billion net ($32.4 billion gross) in agency mortgage-backed securities, which represents the exchange of thin-air money for GSE MBS paper.
So far, all that we know about is that the Fed is talking about how to take the punchbowl away but that bankers are warning the Fed to "go slow."

Lehman Monday Morning Lesson Lost With Obama Regulator-in-Chief

Bloomberg
One year after the demise of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. paralyzed the financial system, “mega-banks,” as Fine’s group calls them, are as interconnected and inscrutable as ever. The Obama administration’s plan for a regulatory overhaul wouldn’t force them to shrink or simplify their structure.
Policy of Containment
“We could have another Lehman Monday,” Niall Ferguson, author of the 2008 book “The Ascent of Money” and a professor of history at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, said in an interview. “The system is essentially unchanged, except that post-Lehman, the survivors have ‘too big to fail’ tattooed on their chests.”

A Zero Hedge Petition: Break Debt Habit, Freeze The Debt Ceiling

Zero Hedge
Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership.
- Sen. Barack Obama, 2006
While Zero Hedge has been accused of disagreeing with President Obama's statements, ideas, and policies before, we would like to state on the record that we wholeheartedly agree with the President on this one occasion, with the caveat that it was uttered at a time when i) he was not a president, and ii) he presumably actually did in fact care about "our children and grandchildren" instead of simply indulging in an onanistic splurge of spending, bailing out beta chasing bankers and hedge fund managers, and, through his appointee Ben Bernanke, reducing the national currency of the United States to a smoking hulk of burnt toast. Superimposing Obama from 2006 with his current incarnation, threatens a schizoid break no less than would dropping Bono's two alte

The same agricultural policies that made farmers into commodity crop growers are at the root of the current obesity epidemic. According to a report by the Institute for Agricultural and Trade Policy called “Food Without Thought: How US Farm Policy Contributes to Obesity,” “the problem with the extensive use of cheap commodities in food products is that they fall into the very dietary categories that have been linked to obesity: added sugars and fats. US Farm policies driving down the price of these commodities made added sugars and fats some of the cheapest food substances to produce. High fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated vegetable oils " products that did not even exist a few generations ago but are now hard to avoid " have proliferated thanks to artificially cheap corn and soybeans.”[13] In other words, US farm policies make poor eating habits an economically sensible choice " with long-term negative health consequences for consumers and economically devastating consequences for

"Today we stand at a precipice." Then-Senator Barack Obama told an audience in Racine, Wisconsin last year, "If we are able to reduce carbon emissions and build a sustainable future, our children will benefit for generations."
The future President has stated that environmental policy will be one of the cornerstones of his tenure in the White House. In order to reduce pollution caused by carbon dioxide, President Obama has pushed for various pieces of legislation, including the Cash for Clunkers bill and the so-called Cap and Trade provisions.
Both candidate and President Obama has stated that a paramount goal would be to reduce American need for foreign sources of fuel.
Many of the efforts to reduce energy consumption are well-known to the American people. These include turning off lights when not in a room, insulating buildings, and raising mileage standards for automobiles. However, one small proviso has many within the Defense Department and in Congress infuri

The Consumer Credit Game Is OVER

The Market Ticker
Do not be fooled by the talking heads on TV - the above graph proves what is really going on and what is at stake. It is not possible to "restart" credit demand among consumers as we have failed in our efforts to boost consumer income, the means by which one pays debt. The consumer has hit the wall as ever-increasing demands on income for the necessities of life - the price of which (food, fuel and medical care in particular) has risen much faster than their income and they are trapped. Finally, the insane ramp in Federal Borrowing has resulted in a precipitous decline in the value of the dollar - a decline that is now threatening to become disorderly.
In other words, policy actions have had and will have no impact on the group that must recover for a durable economic recovery - the consumer - as those lower borrowing costs either can't be or haven't been passed through but instead are being STOLEN to cover up bank insolvencies and are CAUSING upward pressure

The Federal Reserve was to play a major role in the Obama Administration’s proposed regulatory overhaul of the financial system, but Congress may stand in the way. Many Senators have lost confidence in the Federal Reserve and are now moving a different route for financial regulatory reform.
A new piece of legislation taking shape in the Senate’s Banking Committee would give the Federal Reserve far less authority than the Obama administration had originally thought when it proposed the reforms that it had unveiled in June. Why the change? Senators from both sides of the aisle have lost confidence in the Fed in the wake of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, challenging every from the central bank’s lack of transparency to its ability to protect consumers.
