Tide changing on cap and trade, fight moves to Senate
6/29/09
•
The Examiner
In one of the closest Congressional votes since Barack Obama took office, the Cap-and-Trade energy tax bill was approved by a very thin margin, thanks to the defections of 44 Democrats who voted against the President and the House leadership.
The final vote in the House was 219 for and 212 against. All but 8 Republicans stood firm for the American people and voted against this ghastly piece of legislation. All but 44 Democrats voted in favor of this onslaught on our money and our sources of income

Chris Nelder on Seven Energy Futures

By the end of this century then, a mere 90 years from now, we'll need to have an infrastructure that runs exclusively on renewably generated electricity, biofuels, and possibly nuclear energy. That's where we're going.
Fortunately, there is more than enough available renewable energy to meet all of our needs, if we can harness it. Unfortunately, we're starting from a point at which less than 2% of the world's energy comes from renewables like wind, solar and geothermal.

What I have learned to appreciate though is that the locales are huge in their own right and are unpopulated by man for some incredibly good reasons. Like, how do you keep hungry crocodiles away? What is also not understood is that the areal extent compares to France and has maintained a Dawn Age swamp rich ecology since then. Add in the simple fact that these water loving reptiles are active hunters at night to avoid overheating in the sun and we have a challenging hunt on our hands.

It comes down to this: Each "representative" that voted to pass Cap and Trade has violated their Congressional Oath of Office to "well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office." How on earth can you--in good faith--fulfill the duties of the office by voting to pass 1500 pages of legislation YOU HAVEN'T READ?! ...Video:.

Alarming Levels of Pesticides Found in Fruits and Vegetables
6/29/09
•
Green Energy News
It is becoming more apparent to scientists and experts that ingesting pesticide ridden foods are detrimental to human body function and overall health, particularly during fetal development and early childhood years. Trials performed at Emory University - one of the United States’ leading research schools in Atlanta - concluded that urine and saliva of children eating conventional fruits and vegetables were found to hold alarming biological markers of organophosphates. Daunting enough, some of these chemicals were created from nerve gas agents that were utilized during World War II.

Russia Holds Major War Games In Caucasus
06-29-2009
•
CBS
(AP)
Thousands of troops, backed by hundreds of tanks, artillery and other
heavy weaponry, began rumbling through the North Caucasus on Monday, as
Russia began its largest military exercises since last year's war with
Georgia.
The
Caucasus 2009 war games are being seen by many experts as a warning
shot for nearby Georgia, where the government says it has rearmed armed
forces and where NATO recently wrapped up its own exercises.
Experts
say the exercises may also be signal to the United States that Russia
will give no ground on its efforts to maintain an exclusive sphere of
influence in Georgia and other former Soviet republics. The games run
through July 6 _ the day that President Barack Obama arrives in Moscow
for a highly anticipated summit with Russia's Dmitry Medvedev.
Defense
Ministry official say more than 8,500 troops will take part, along with
nearly 200 tanks, armored vehicles, 100 artillery units and several
units

Bernard Madoff gets maximum 150 years in prison
06-29-2009
•
Boston Herald
U.S. District Court Judge Denny
Chin sentenced Bernard Madoff to the maximum 150 years in prison today
for running the biggest Ponzi scheme in history, calling the crime:
“extraordinarily evil.”
“Symbolism is important,” Chin told Madoff at a New York sentencing hearing.
Earlier, Madoff spoke for the first time about the scam, telling
Chin: “I will live with the pain and torment (of hurting people) for
the rest of my life.”
“I cannot offer an excuse for my behavior,” Madoff said. “How to do
excuse deceiving investors? How do you excuse lying to your sons? How
do you excuse lying to your two brothers? How do you excuse lying to a
wife who stood by me for 50 years.
“There is no excuse for that,” Madoff told the court. “I made a
terrible mistake. . . . I’ve left a legacy of shame for my children and
grandchildren. I will live with the pain and torment the rest of my
life.”
Then, the scammer turned to victims in the courtroom and

Court rules for white firefighters over promotions
06-29-2009
•
Washington Post
The Supreme Court ruled Monday that white firefighters in New Haven,
Conn., were unfairly denied promotions because of their race, reversing
a decision that high court nominee Sonia Sotomayor endorsed as an
appeals court judge.
New Haven was wrong to scrap a promotion exam because no
African-Americans and only two Hispanic firefighters were likely to be
made lieutenants or captains based on the results, the court said
Monday in a 5-4 decision. The city said that it had acted to avoid a
lawsuit from minorities.
The ruling could alter employment practices nationwide and make it
harder to prove discrimination when there is no evidence it was
intentional.
"Fear of litigation alone cannot justify an employer's reliance on
race to the detriment of individuals who passed the examinations and
qualified for promotions," Justice Anthony Kennedy said in his opinion
for the court. He was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices
Samuel Ali

Will Iran Take the Heat Off Israel over Settlements?
06-29-2009
•
Time magazine
The reason for canceling Thursday's scheduled meeting in Paris between Benjamin Netanyahu
and George Mitchell was simple: there was nothing for the Israeli Prime
Minister and President Obama's Middle East peace envoy to discuss. The
U.S. has demanded a complete freeze in Israeli settlement construction
in territories conquered in 1967, making it a litmus test of Israel's
bona fides in pursuing the two-state solution, which the Obama
Administration has prioritized.

The proper response is a modest slap down to remind them that bad behavior has consequences. Except that the Bush administration did not have the answer to that either. And we are all getting tired of sanctions.
The current internal turmoil may resolve this now or later anyway. The country is financially strained and must continue to underperform.
