The text of the Lincoln letter is a 1880s hoax. It does not appear in Lincoln’s papers and the oldest copy dates to some twenty years after his assassination. It is a product of popular anti-Catholicism and anti-Jesuit sentiments which ran rapid in the nineteenth and early twentieth century (and obviously still exist in some quarters. The half truths of the commentary would take more time than I have at the moment a I am packing for Texas.
