Plasmas are hideously non-linear and difficult to model. We still don't know exactly how burning plasmas will behave in fusion reactors. Such models, being horribly non-linear and massively computer intensive, and can always be improved. Sure, the potential benefits of alphas in generating "free" current and transitioning to steady state operation
