When the pacu cannot find its normal food—nuts, snails, and vegetation indigenous to the Amazon—it becomes a meat eater. In Papua New Guinea it's called the 'ball-cutter fish' because it attacks male swimmers and fishermen and savagely bites off their testicles. Two men "died after being castrated by a [pacu] while swimming in a river, causing them to bleed to death."
